A/f gauges are garbarge, really just a blinking light, and really doesn't give you a safe or reliable tune, unless you are going wideband, why doesn't more 3rd geners use egt gauges??

Don't ask me, I've got a wideband O2 and a pyrometer.

I've tuned with wide band, I agree it doesn't seem very accurate.

How do you tune with a EGT?

I agree EGT is the way to go, some manufacturers use buffer circutry to create a more accurate reading even from conventional O2 sensor output. here they are: http://www.nordskogperformance.net/d70140.html

a lot of people choose the A/F based off of 02 readings because of its price, and ease of hookup.

3 wires..

No need to drill an exhaust bung, route wires, etc..

For most applications, the o2 based AF is all that's needed. (when they only need a rough idea of the current condition)

My wideband o2 with the speed pro seems to do the job just fine

Thats funny, the folks that like WBO2's say the same thing about EGT's. personally, I think that they are both good tools, but both can be missleading, if you dont know what the rest of the motor is doing. I think that they can be used independantly or simultaneously, but you have to be watching the plugs to see what is going on inside the motor.

thats my take on it.

only way to accurately do that is to shut the motor down right after you cross the traps and tow it back to the pits and THEN check the plugs. Otherwise....you wont get accurate readings

I dont really want to shut my engine off after a full throttle blast down the 1/4. Hate for the turbo to clog up with burnt oil.

Ill just stick to my WB02. It hasnt led me astray yet.

Yup, specially if the tune is WAY off for the part throttle stuff. one thing though is that if you have detonation, even if your part throttle stuff is out to lunch you can drive it back to the pits & pull plugs & see metal on the plugs & not have to worry about it going away. its like a maganet, how well it sticks to it. but lots of times you can hear that & if its that bad you ought to be getting out of it.

if part throttle is close & the car is not in that bad a state of tune, you should be able to drive it back to the pits (as long as we are not talking about 2 miles back to the pits). Then see if the changes in tuneup are going in the right direction in the ET & MPH, AND check plugs to see if you are hurting anything.

Mind you the big stuff should be simpler with a WBO2, but it is hard to concentrate on banging gears & keeping it straight & stopping & other semi-important stuff w/o having to look @ a O2 meter as well, the logger comes in handy there. Pluss the WBO2 is only going to get you close, the fine tuning is going to be done with the time slip, not the WBO2, or EGT, or plugs or any of that.
