ATI/Vortech with Iron L98 heads

Fellas,

Tax time has allowed me to purchase a nice shiny new blower. Haven't bought it yet but have some concerns.

Right now my 89 L98 TPI motor is somewhere near 9.5:1 CR with TRW Forged Pistons.
Block was .030" overbored.
Crank is stock nodular iron turned 10/10.
Cam is Crane CompuCams 214/220, .452/.465 112 LSA.
Heads are stock iron L98 heads with a 3 angle valve job.
I have 24 lb/hr FRPP fuel injectors fed by a Walbro 255 in-tank pump and I do my own chips.

Is the rated "out-of-the-box" 6-8 psi of the Vortech and ATI too much for the iron headed L98?? Look I just want to put the blower on and tune the Prom around it. Not going to get greedy and want 10+ psi of boost.

Thanks

Agreed. I'm running the D-1SC w/ 10# pulley and a stock bottom end. About to click off 10,000 miles with the setup and no engine probs yet.(knock on wood). Btw I would definetly recommend an intercooled procharger over the vortech.

I'm running a Vortech S-Trim (V1) on a completely stock L98. Blower was installed @ 75,000 miles. Motor is now at 113,000 miles and I think the rings are worn (smoke on startup sometimes). I'm rebuilding the motor so I can turn up the boost. Either blower setup should be fine on your engine as long as its properly maintained. I dont know if the previous owner of my car properly maintained it (still had the OE fuel filter when I got it!) so thats probably why I am having issues. You'll probably want to change to a synthetic oil with more vescosity. I would also recommend some cooling mods (one of those slick Be Cool radiators for example, or upgraded fans) as the blower will cause the temps under the hood to rise. I'm having issues with the cooling setup (also stock) causing me to loose some of the viscosity in my oil (I run Mobil1 Red Cap Synthetic 15w50). Since you mentioned you are doing your own chips, you might also want to look into the 749 ECM swap. With $58 code you can get the 749 Syclone/Typhoon ECM to control your engine on boost. You can also mod your 730 ECM to act as a 749. The FMU's that come with either unit will work, but burning your own chips will allow you to tune the setup for any aftermarket engine work you've done.

CrazyHawaiian: How much boost are you pushing thru the iron L98 heads? Do you see alot of knock and subsequent timing retard??

CRZYTRN-92Z28: 10#'s thru the stock iron headed L98? Wow! That's alot. Are you verifying that with a boost gauge?? Do you have to dial your timing back some as well to avoid the knock??
The intercooler is an awesome benefit with ATI. I have been doing the research about their blowers.

Thanks fellas.

Ya man I got an autometer phantom boost gauge. Actually ATI has a graph that came w/ the procharger and it shows that I can run up to 14pounds of intercooled boost with a 9:5:1 compression ratio, on 91 octane. I'm running full timing and am not using octane boosters unless I know i'm going to be racing.
Ah the benefits of intercooled boost .

Dude, I'm sold on the ATI in this case. Are you using the 2-row IC or did you upgrade to the 3-row for extra coupla hundred bucks?

Speaking of removing the heat; does the IC'd ATI keep the under hood temps down?

Do you get any belt slippage with the ATI? Many of the folks who run them complain about that.

Lastly, how was installation and fitment of the ATI? This has long been an argument on the ATI vs. Vortech threads. ATIs they say are alot better when it comes to the IC'd boost, therefore you can make more power, but the Vortech guys say that the Vortech has better fitment and is hella easier to install.

Thanks again guys.

I got the 3 row IC. As far as the underhood heat problems I did have to get some stronger fans from flex-a-lite to cool it down.

I did have belt slippage when I first intalled it, and netted 285hp. We retightened it on the dyno after and got me 343hp. Definite improvement. Since then ive had no belt slippage problems. I've always seen 8-10lbs.

You got it man, Vortech's easier to install but risks detonation more. ATI is harder to install, but can yield safer results IMO. I installed the ATI system in about 2 days give or take.

Um the problem would be your valve seals, if your rings were worn you'd have blowby and that dosent seem to be the condition.

Sorry, you're right, its the valve seals not the rings (why do I keep saying rings??). Sena, I'm pushing 6 psi. The Vortech FMU works in conjunction with a MSD 6BTM Ignition allowing me to retard the ignition timing based on the amount of boost being produced by the supercharger. The timing is adjusted from a dash mounted **** and can be retarded 1 - 3° per pound of boost with a maximum of 15°. With this set @ 2° I have not seen any knocking under WOT, Idle, or daily driving (got a knock light). I would recommend the MSD 6BTM to anyone who wants this kind of control of the timing under boost. It should work with either the ATI or the Vortech setup.

CRZYTRN-92Z28:

Do you use the MSD6BTM as well?

I'm currently using the MSD Digital 6 Plus and I was going to control the timing from the PROM. See any problems with this??

-Thanks

No i have Accel ignition. Crazy Hawaiian has the ideal setup. If i had the cash I'd go the same way
he did. I have no problems with knock/ping and if I did i'd just go get the old timing light out and play with it. I wouldnt think youd have a problem using the prom to adjust the timing, it should all work nicely. Your allowed to run full timing on 91 octane all day long, so I doubt you'll even have to mess with it.
