Paxton..making noise?
Paxton..making noise?
I just put a new intake on my supercharger similar to LSBLOWNZ28's and I just noticed a small winning sound. Nothing really obvious, however, it has me a little worried. IT's producing the same amout of boost and same performance. I change the oil every 1K, have a cooler for it and it seems fine. I have heard that the sn2000's go out pretty easy, however, mine has been great ...........so far.
I have read the archives and a winne sound can indicate upcomming supercharger failure. The winne i'm hearing is very very hard to hear. When I am at teh low end of the rpms where the trany does not shift to the lower gear and putting a load on teh engine. I can hear the squeel just a little. I"m a little worried that rebuild time is around the corner

Avoid catastrophic failure at all costs. Play it smart. If there is ANY doubt in your mind that something might be wrong, have the blower inspected ASAP.

Raiden ,
This Intake dose make more noise, kinda like a slight whistleing / whinning noise at or just above Idle. Then a deeper
whining / air rushing noise coming from the Filter inlets.
This seems to be normal IMO. Mine has done this from the first day with this intake design.
The bearing fail mode noise is at all rpm's and comes from under the hood at the blower and is very noisey.
If you still question the noise take the belt off the blower and turn it by hand it will be very tight and notchy with a failed bearing.

Call Craig at Paradise Wheels (760-740-0954).
I think he's the only one working the Ball Drive PAXTON's.

It seems to spin freely by hand....with some force. No snagging or rough spinning. IT all of the sudden started to whistle just a little bit. You can hear it in the car under slight acceleration and deceleration. I fear the worst is at hand, but it is still creating 8psi. I"m taking her off for a while! Till I can muster up 7 bills!

Yes it should take up to 70in/lbs of torque to turn, but it should
turn smoothly.
I think mine has made that whistle for the last 30,000 miles when
I made the Induction tract first with flex hose, now the bent tubeing.
I think if you take a mechanics stethoscope (or the old screw driver trick in the ear) and place it on the housing and change the rpm at the point of the whistle you'll find that the noise is not coming from a mechanical part of the blower but that its more of a airflow noise.
Question: have you changed the oil and found any metal.
I have a clear see thru filter in my cooler line so I can see if the oil
is dirty or any metal.

definitely. the more you open up the inlet side on blowers the louder they get it says you made a change to the inlet side? this applys to the eatons too. we modified the inlet on a lightning and it sounded like it had a siren when you got on it. I know this applys to centrifugals but it might even apply to turbos too. I think its a good sign that you removed a restriction.

Heres another good example of what B4Ctom1 said...
When I remove my inlet tube from my blower (1998 Grand Prix GTP), is whines like a SOB! Under accealeration it sounds like something is SERIOUSLY wrong under the hood!
I dont think its anything to worry about.
Just chill and enjoy!

when we did that to the lightning on the dyno it picked up a few horses on the dyno but the whine may have given me ear damage.
I changed my intake and put a filter and a small piece of hose on it to see if the intake was causing the noise. The charger is still making the wine. The oil is clean...well, it was brand new oil as of 2 weeks ago when i put the charger back on. I fear the worst. Everything I've read on our s/c's says that this is the beginning of the end. I am considering puting some B&M tirck shift fluid in and seeing if that helps. Also, I found a manual on ebay to rebuild the sn series chargers. I was thinking of getting that book and the parts and rebuild the charger myself? Has anyone tried this?

I agree...... I want to know if anyone has tried to rebuild one of these? Does anyone know how much a rebuild kit or the manual is? I have a spare SN93 I may try it, just to see what happens.

When I bought my SN92 new a long time ago, I used Ford Motorcraft fluid as per Paxton's recommendation, not any Type F fluid, but that it had to be Motorcraft. Less than one year later when it started whining, I shipped it back to Paxton and was told it needed a rebuild. I was told NOT to run Motorcraft, that I should be using Trick Shift fluid. When I got it back, that's exactly what I did. I also added their dipstick oil cooler, replacing the cooler itself with a Flex-a-lite unit with integral fan. Seven months later, that same familiar whine came back. I shipped it to Paxton again and was told NEVER to use Trick Shift fluid; that the tech who recommended it to me (and it was in writing) no longer worked there. This time, I was told that ANY Type F fluid would do. When I was told this, I concluded that Paxton had a problem with this blower failing prematurely and they were experimenting with different fluids, hoping to come up with an easy solution. It was at this time that I decided that enough was enough and sold mine. That was three years ago.
So what fluid are they recommending today?

Ford Type F is what i was told by paradise. So what will happen if i run the charger with teh whine??? Otherwords, will my repair bill be much more with a charger taht is starting to fail in contrast with a charger that has a catostrophic failure???

I don't know. When mine started making noise, I immediately removed it and had it serviced. I assume in a way it's like an alternator bearing going out -- it will continue to work for a while until it finally seizes. BUT the primary difference between an alternator whine and a supercharger whine is that the blower has a step-up ratio. The SN is 4.4 so that sucker is spinning that many times more than an alternator (at least on the impeller side). The impeller's tolerance is extremely exacting and if a bearing were to go bad, causing it to wobble even just slightly, it could contact the housing. This would not only mean a rebuild, but a new impeller and who knows what else.
On a similar note, I pulled a good one on my D1SC last year. I accidentally left a very small washer in the intake hose that attaches to the blower. It eventually worked its way to the impeller. What I heard were a couple of "tink, tink, tink" sounds. My blower required complete disassembly and a new impeller. My impeller alone was $675. One very expensive blunder with no one to blame but myself. I felt like an idiot.
As I stated earlier, if there's ANY doubt in your mind, have it inspected immediately. Don't risk damaging more parts. Get peace of mind. Remember the commercial, "You can pay me now or you can pay me later"???

Hey Louis, this is craig by theway..if ya didnot know. No, I did not have it inspected yet. I just had knee surgery two weeks ago and I still can not get around too well
I'm out of work for another 3 weeks at the least. When I do get it inspected, I'll keep ya posted!
