Which turbo for my friends car

I know I'm not a normal on the Power Adder forum, but I've seen alot of good turbo posts lately.

Here's the deal, a friend of mine is about to switch from blower to turbo, but he really doesn't know awhole lot about turbos, so what are some things he should research and what size turbo should be run.

His engine as is:
406 Small Block (Dart block)
Forged 6" rods
JE Pistons -28cc dish around 8.4 comrpession
AFR 210s minor porting to flow about 15 cfm over stock AFR 210s
Accel Gen 7 with 90lb injectors
Cam is around .650 lift, 250-260 or so duration range.
Procharger D1R at around 18lbs of boost.

It recently ran a 9.16 at 148 but he's unhappy and thinks he can benefit from a turbo.

There is a possiblity that he may switch to 18 degree heads, but at the moment, he's going to keep the AFRs and try just a turbo swap. What would you recommend for him?

Thanks

I've had both, they certainly are different in terms of average power. The turbo will flat out whoop any centrifigual in on the mid rpm torque. Can he fabricate? Otherwise he'll be looking for a kit or someone to do custom headers. They can be done in stainless or lower cost solutions like weld els work well too.

The plumbing will need to be custom aswell.

Turbo selection depends on how much power he wants , whether he's more comfortable plumbing twins or a single, intercooler design and drivetrain.

Don't get me wrong, Procharger's make great power but, the proper turbo is tough to beat. Feel free to email me for any specifics.

Yes he can fabricate. He will be building his headers. He built all the plumbing for his car now, and plans to do so for the turbo. His engine is in a 64 rambler, so most everything he does is custom. He wants a single turbo. He's thinking around 98-106mm range. Intercooler will be air to water. Drivetrain is a JW turbo 400 right now but may change to a glide. All back to a ford 9".

I'll send him a link to this thread sometime and he may want to contact you. He's still up in the air on his decisions. One guy is telling him 106mm other is 98mm.

I would just call up a respected turbo company and tell them what you have and what you want. They answer these questions all day long.

BMR suspension products is doing a turbo build up.. i forget the specifics on the motor, but its a small block (rocket block) with SB2 heads and the spider intake used in nascar, they are using a 96mm turbo and plan on making 1300HP and running mid 8's... maybe check that out... and proturbokits.com sells 88-106mm turbo's, aswell as the air to water intercoolers to support upto 2500 HP... but a COMPLETE custom kit is like $10,000
