front mount intercooler?

Maybe this isn't everyone's taste, but I love the look of a front mount intercooler....

I was driving home for lunch and was thinking about the Trenz billet grill. It requires you to cut out the center portion of the front bumper (Camaro). I was wondering if anyone had done the same thing, only to stuff a front mount intercooler in there?

Got pics?

Is there any advantage to a front mount over say another setup for a 3rdgen? Obviously it seems it would get more air, but are there any other advantages?

Here's my front mount setup from when I was fitting it into the car, though I didnt cut the bumper I have a scoop that grabs air from under the car.

Heh, I like that… in a way it's a shame to cover it up with the nose.

Do you ever have issues with dragging the plumbing on stuff? It looks like it's probably about as low as the stock air dam.

Andris Skulte did it. Check out his webpage with his TT project to see pics of the install. He fit it right behind where the front plate used to be (cut the middle portion out). Looked cool!! But required alot of hacking to get it to fit. I'm planning to do an odd intercooler installation on my 91 Z, but I'm gonna wait until I remove the blower and install the turbo setup. I'm basically going to install a front mount, but instead of the IC being vertical with the ground, its going to be laid back enough to still make contact with air, but also allow air to pass over it and up to the radiator. On the tops and sides I will be running coolers (for other fuilds). I got the idea when I saw a vertical mount IC install on an RX7.

Your right it's just about as low as the stock air dam, 90% of the time it doesnt give me a problem but I do have to be carefull entering and exiting parking lots/driveways if it's too steep or larger dips in the road. I do plan on adjusting the coilovers in the front to bring the nose up a little this year and get rid of some of the rake the car has, hopefully that will help.

Here's a pic of the pipes when I was going to leave the stock air dam in(cut to allow the tubes through)before I made up a scoop that bolts to the bottom of the intercooler to really try and catch some air:

with a 1.47 you've got to be seeing some air under the hoops... you're not having any problems with that on the landing?

You know it's funny but my car never really likes to pull the wheels, I think due to the 3.08 rear gears. Ocasionally it'll get them up 2-3" when the track is really hooking but hitting the pipes has not been a problem.

I'm changing to 3.42 gears this weekend and will be running 28" slicks for this season so with a little luck I'll be able to get some wheels up launches, hopefully the pipes dont become a problem.

I'm sorry for hijacking this thread (but while I'm at it):

Do you have any more details on the car? There seem to be quite a few interesting things going on there. High on my list of things are the choice of the th400 over building up a TH200-4r or a TH350, or even a TH700. All of those would have had a packaging advantage in an f-body, and the 400 has the big disadvantage of being a power hungry pig and not really playing nice with anything else (what did you do with the TA…).

I'm somewhat debating the same thing right now with a combination that should be fairly similar (well, probably more low end since I'll be starting with a turbo V8), which right now has a 700r4 in it that I expect will expire very quickly (it's not particularly happy now running mid 13's with a stock L98)

Feel free to email me a response if you don't feel like cluttering things up here

It's a Charged Air System V2 for a TTA, basicly it's the GN version of the V2 with modified tubes and lower mounting point.

They used to have a website but I cant seem to find it, maybe they went out of buisiness. They used to have a whole line of intercoolers including setups for twins or big singles. I gotta talk to a few people and see what happened to them, I'll let you know if I find out anything.

I really like your FMIC but don't try driving that thing in Cheyenne Wyoming. There are drainage dips about every other block.

yes I like this FMIC outa of most of them I have seen. It would be nice with 1side In one side out type setup. Instead of the bottom like that.

Can you get some core and side tank measurements if you cant track down a url for some of us?

Sure I'd be happy to get some measurements and specifics about it. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get the rear back in the car so sometime this week I'll jack up the front end and take some measurements.

Here's a closer shot of it mounted in my car. The two little mounts sticking out of the bottom are where the scoop bolt to and there are another two on the top that bolt to the hood latch area.

Also here is a link with some pics to when the company(Charged Air Systems)was making and fitting the prototype of my intercooler.

It is plenty of room to the sides under the frame.

This is 4" pipes up thru the battery tray:

What about the right side?

Hey Steve, do u have the dimension #'s for the CAS V2? I need the numbers of the core if I am gonna make one. The pictures u supplied are great and will help with the building process.

Left and right are the same. You only have to move some stuff like the vacuum ball, canister and such.

The dimensions of my intercooler are 13" high, 23 5/8" wide, and 3 1/2" thick. I couldnt really get specs on the tanks but if you find out the distance between the bumper supports then subtract the width of the core(23 5/8")and another 1/2" for clearance(1/4" on each side)you'll get the amount of room you have left to play with. Split that figure in two and you'll know exactly how big the tanks can be, probrobly a little over 3".

HTH,
Steve

Dimensions:

Core Length : 24" (600mm)
Core Height: 12" (300mm)
Core Thickness: 3" (75mm)
Inlet Size: 3" o/d (75mm)
Outlet Size: 3" o/d (75mm)
"End to End" Length: 32" (800mm)

I think that you should be able to make it fit.
The frame rails gets narrower in front of the radiator.

This is the one we used where the AC condensor was:

Core Length : (655mm)

Spearco has a air/air front mount intercooler that is close to the CAS V2 intercooler dimensions

Yes they do indeed. The tanks look much larger. So much so I am afraid of clearance probs.

Thats extreamly close to the V2 dimensions, is that just the core or are the tanks there too? If thats just the core then I think it would be the best way to go, then fab/weld up the tanks for best fit. If it's complete with tanks then it would be a bit on the small side but should still work nicely(my dimensions were for the core only, there's still at least 3" on either side for the tanks).

Is there a website listing the cores they have avalible?

Steve
