Oil Cooler? Hot climate & SC'er...

I live in the CA desert and it's very hot all summer long, when I install my ProCharger I wanted to install an oil cooler.

Do I need one? I use RoyalPurple and I was told that this kind of oil does not really need a cooler, that it will hold a consistant temp when it gets hot and never really get too hot. True or B.S.?

I once saw a pic of Willie's oil cooler and it looked perfect. What kind is it? We both have the exact same weather and I'm also going with the dual intercooler setup...

I didn't need one with the turbos until I got about 15 minutes of hard road racing track time. On the street, oil temps would always be about 20 deg hotter than water, even during the 90 deg summer temps in New England. Get an oil temp gauge, and if you start seeing numbers above 300, then worry about an oil cooler. I assume you're running synthetic RP oil? They're fine below about 320 degF, from what I've read, although at that point, the viscosity is much thinner. For instance, the Z28tt idles at about 35 psi cold, 20 psi normal hot, and 10 at 340 deg temps.

My oil cooler is a Hayden kit in which I used the sandwich adapter and aluminum oil tubes. I discarded the rubber hoses and used braided lines instead.

Also, I replaced the included oil cooler with a Perma-Cool frame rail unit. This pic was taken when I had my single 3-core intercooler, which I no longer have.

Thank guys!

I'll install an oil temp guage for next summer and see what happens. Not a huge deal for me because I expect summer '05 to be the last for this engine so I can try different things. If no cooler was bad and it gets too hot, no big deal because I'll be rebuilding it in the fall about a year from now anyway.

I really like that Perma-Cool frame rail unit, I like the looks and the position. You don't happen to have a P/N would you? Where is your oil filter Willie? Can I get that sandwich adapter by it's self? I can have a local shop fab me up the steel tubing and braided lines....

My oil filter isn't on because I took these pics when I was installing the cooler. I think you can buy the sandwich adapter alone. Let me look over some paperwork. I'll see if I can find any info, part numbers and such.

Here is the Perma Cool info:

And adapters:

I am in the process of installing a big oil cooler now. If you have long tube headers, check your clearance with the sandwich style adapters. I had to toss that in favor of a filter relocation style unit.

I usually shop at Summit or Jegs.

here is a picture of the racing oil cooler pn prm-501 that I mounted between the Spearco intercooler and Be Cool radiator:

You might also consider a competiton style mount that comes with -an fittings, and means buying fewer adapters and higher flow.
