buick 3.8 turbo swap
I own a 91 Trans am with a 305. Im building a 350 (383) and all that good stuff. here is the deal. IM BORED with the usual V8 crap. everyone is building a bigger V8 than the other guy for their camaro or firebird with a 700r4 or th350 a hugh cam and 3.73 gears. I want something different.
What do you guys know and/or think about a modified 3.8 turbo buick bolted to my 700r4 and 373 gears?
I know poniac did this at one time, plus the GN and the TA weigh about the same.

It would be fun, but expensive. I heard the factory TTA headers are extinct, and aftermarkets are quite expensive. You can make them run though. My friend had a TTA with minor mods running high 11's. I'm not too sure about the 700r4 boltup. I thought the Turbo trans am came with the 2004r like the GN's
If you have money and want to be different its the way to go.
P.s. as long as you stay out of boost it gets great milage.

look around on the GN board for used motors. I was thinking about this swap ahile ago and found a few good deals. Complete motors RTR in the 3-4-5k range depending on miles and mods.
a buddy of mine did the swap in his 89iroc. He hasnt updated his pic;s In awhile so i dono if he has any or not.

That would be totally bitchin'! I thought about this a while back, but the cost issue pretty much killed the idea.

Are these engines really worth that much????? I realize the carb ones aren't worth as much, but I have a 3.8 out of a Regal.......It is a factory turbo engine with Q-jet manifold. It needs to be freshened up, but supposedly ran when it was pulled. I have all the exhaust stuff(stock) and the turbo is in good shape. What do you guys think it is worth??????

The carb'd 3.8 turbo regal motors are not worth too much. You can buy whole running cars for $1500.
The 1984-1985 3.8 turbo regals were fuel injected but not intercooled.
The 1986-1987 3.8 turbo regals were fuel injected and intercooled. If you are after performance, then one of these motors would be what you are after.

To answer one of the original questions...yes you can use a 700r4. TCI makes an adapter that allows a chevy trans to bolt up to a BOP block. The also make one that is vice versa. I ran the 700r4 when I had the TTA motor in my GTA.

it's a 4.1L, Sonme say it doesn't have the strength the 3.8 does and is generally weaker than the 3.8L. Doesn't mean you cant use it, it does mean that the large bore short stroke(i.e. 350 chevy) lends itself better to higher rpm power and moves that power band up in the rpm range as compared to the 3.8. Stock buick rotating assemblies wouldn't be my choice to start revving.
Why do the swap u could buy mine
All the work is done for you, just needs a tune and someone to blast a 10sec pass in it...

modding a TR motor is expensive. the carbed versions only make around 120 BHP i beleive, the fuel injected intercooled are around 250- but easily to get in the 400 range. i was going to buy a GN motor for my camaro- but i bought a GN instead and now building the TT small block for it
if you wanna be different do somthing like that- there are a bunch of GN powered TAs- the TTAs, the syclone motor is too much money to work on for parts and too small of an aftermarket. once you get one its addicting- i thought i would leave mine stock, untill i went to a couple aftermarket sites just to "browse" and so far ive spend like 4K just on external stuff- the rotating assembly is stock. it would be a fun swap- but i dont think its worth it just to try and be different when there are a bunch of TTAs out there.

uhh the prices are climbing with the turbo buick set-up for the money the lc2 swap will cost I can buy a very low milage lt1 drivetrain.
I was going to do this swap on my 87, but I have yet to do it. I have alot of the stuff needed for the swap that I would be willing to sell. I have a genuine tta motor with less than 3000 miles it is complete less the turbo and coil pack. i also have a brand new GM wiring harness that I bought before they were discontinued. I have an ATR 21/2" tta down pipe i also have the battery cables and the coolant tank blanket. I looking to get 3500 for everything.
