Supercharging method?

I love the idea of a fat roots blower sticking out the hood, with a shiny butterfly-valve scoop, but im not sure how realisitic it is for me I need help on a few of the basics here.

My plan (which is actually realistic now) is to build a 383, but I don't know how I want to set it up for a blower.

If you could help me out, I would really appreciate it.

First off, I dont want to run alot of boost. I want something that will be there for me when I need it, but wont be a bother when I dont (E.G. 8-71 sticking 10" out the top of the cowl)

What would you reccomend for the (carbbed) 383? I don't know what compression ratio I will need to run on 91 octane at around ~5 or 6 lbs of boost. Also, what is a good brand? I love the idea of a Procharger, but I'm not sure about setting up a blow-through carb. I am totally Naiive about blowers, and could use a few tips.

Thanks alot,
Rob

With 5-6psi, I would shoot for 9 to 1 comp with aluminum heads.

I too have a 383 with a blow thru supercharger. I use the procharger set up and am very happy with it. I had a P600B that I got 6psi out of. However, I was having to spin it so fast- I was always fighting belt slip so I just sold it last week. I just ordered a D1SC that should match my set up better.
So The P600B will get you what you want, but with no room to grow. I would look into at least a P1SC if not the D1SC.

As for carb, no bigger than 750cfm. Recommend holley "HP" series or older DP with proform main body. Mods are relatively simple. I can try to help you with that later if needed.

Thanks
Matt

Thanks for the advice. Looks like blowthrough carb and centrifugal is the way to go so far. Was looking at the Weiand Prostreet 142 though, shiinyy. I'd be lying if I said I would mind a scoop sticking through the cowl.. hmmm.

Getting this thing to hook up will be a chore with some gears im thinkin

i too was considering one of the weiand prostreet superchargers a few weeks ago and then i did a little bit of research on the centrifugal blowers and they are MUCH more efficient even without an intercooler, add an intercooler and they've nearly doubled compared to the roots style superchargers. i too love the looks of a big shinny blower sittin outta the hood with an enderle scoop(the three butterfly inlets). but when i did some looking, they just produce way too much heat to be worth the money when you could spend the same on a centrifugal set-up and get 20-25% more power. i like looks, but i like power lots more! for your blowthrough carb, just buy a holley 750 HP and you should be good to throw it on the motor. they come with the "no-choke assembly" and the nitrophyl floats, instead of brass.

just buy a holley 750 HP and you should be good
One problem, I have a CC Quadrajet (feedback)

Oye.

Yea, I don't mind centrifugal by any means. I'd love to run one.

What are recommendations, ATI, Vortec, Paxton, etc?

Oh, and before I forget, what is the trim of a supercharger?

S trim, J trim, etc etc.

If you go with ATI, I'd say either go with a D1SC or an F1. Both are great blowers and both are self-contained.

carb + boost is always a pain in the ***... and its never close to as driveable as a EFI car... most of the time (cant quite say ALL, but the far majority) carbed boosted cars have big driveability problems....

edit:
im talking blow thru systems... and draw thru turbo..

If you plan to pass emmissions, I would check if DS1C or F1 meet California standards before purchasing.

as mr_dude said it is a bit more painless to go efi. but it really isn't that big of a pain in the @$$ to run a blowthrough on a carb setup. besides, the exact same setup on an efi and on a carb will make more power on the carb becuase the charge will be cooler going through a carb than going through an efi setup. its not a huge difference(about 15/14 ratio at 10 lbs) but if you're like me, any increase in power makes me happy! besides, even if you do need to wrench on the car every now and then, thats not so bad... i mean it is a muscle car, what else are they for? if you want something that'll go fast and never need repaired then buy a turbo charged r¡ce burner! everyone loves the sound of a weed-whacker on 4-wheels coming down the road.... but if it were me, i'd go with the ATI D-1SC and a standard 3-core intercooler... i'd say that setup should safely have a 60% hp increase on 10 lbs of boost.

1) scrap the quadrajet- almost impossible to make work for several reasons.
2) Also disagree with Mr dude- "always a pain in ***." Not the case at all. You do need to get to a dyno or purchase a wide band o2 (LM1) to make sure all is safe, but once you get there- you'll be good to go. No problem cruising mine. Also look at www.turbomustangs.com there are cars making for more power than me and you with no problems.

I would also have to disagree with Mr Dude. Lots of people are blowing through carbs with no problems. Two of my friends are blowing through "Carb Shop" carbs with excellent driveability. One is getting 945rwhp, and drives it to car shows all the time. The other is getting 680rwhp and drives it to work almost every day.

since youre really not looking for much and no matter which way you go, youll need to replace the Qjunk, i suggest just picking up a stock TPI intake off ebay. then picking up a procharger. i believe i read someplace that the D1SC kit is carb legal if thats something that concerns you. im not exactly sure so i would check into that.

blow throw carbs are nice, in fact i just got some pics and videos of a blow throw carbed 91-92 z28 tonight with a procharger and nitrous that ran mid 10s at like 125+ mph. but thats a track only car and IMO theres no reason to go carb when EFI is just as cheap and easy to run.

Oye. Converting to TPI. This sounds like some work.

I had the CC Qjet, so I would be dropping in a new Intake, ECM, and wiring harness right? Scary to a newbie like me.

I'd love to scrap the quadrajet. Accel DFI is my wet dream, but I'm sure I'll never be able to afford it.

Hmmm, lots of options.

What about a Holley Stealth Ram and a Megasquirt?

http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...art=HLY%2D7540

http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...rt=HLY-534-185

http://www.rs-autosport.com/

$300 + $175 + $320 for all new parts.

Then you need injectors and a TB.

That combination will support a lot of HP and you can tune for BOOST later when you add a turbo or supercharger. It is also a lot easier to work on than stock GM TPI, both intake and ECM.
