I'm looking for LS1 turbo set-ups. I'm going to be building one soon and I need to get some general ideas. Any links or other forums to look at would be appreciated.

I know this is a 3rd gen site and LS1s are unrelated but I own a 3rd gen and happen to know 3rd genners are the smartest people in the whole world and could provide any info needed to make cars go fast, so thx in adv.

im putting a turbo setup on my 3rdgen LS1... theres a couple others doing the same.

 

What kinda turbo are you using and how much HP are you lookin for? Thx for links.

 

I just ordered one of the new Warhawk LS7X 9.800" deck x 4.115" bore blocks today and a pair of the LS7X 12* heads. I haven't finalized all the details yet, but I'm looking for around 1400-1500hp on pump gas with a pair of T70's or T72's. Gotta out do my old 1200hp TT SBC 427.

thanks for dragging up a 2 month old post to tell us about a dealer that installs a ****ty turbo setup (relitively speaking) for a car similar to ours..

afterall, the only thing better then paying a premium on price for a system that bolts on easily.... is paying another premium price on top of it for someone to modify and install that system on your 3rdgen LS1

 

Wow. Anyone who doesn't think the rear mount kits work, has never been lined up with one. I caught one on the street in my 1992 Corvette about a year ago. Stock 99 SS M6 with an STS kit at 8 psi. My 92 corvette 6 speed was running high 11's at 119-121 MPH depending on traction and weather.

Anyway, when I raced that rear mounted turbo SS, I murdered him out of the hole. I could literally see him in my rear view mirror when I shifted to second. I actually remeber thinking, "There is no way he'll catch me, I trap 120 for ***'s sake." At the top of third (about 90 MPH) he came by me. Not sucking off the paint or anything, but he came by hard enough to let us both know who had the faster car.

I agree that the rear mount option is pretty worthless for the purposes of this particular thread, but the system does work.

Back on topic, the forced induction section at www.ls1tech.com is excellent. 99t67ls1 made ~920 RWHP on there with a backyard built twin kit. Definitely some big power, fast cars on there.

 

The STS kit is okay. I like a lot of the other kits better. The truck manifold kits and the GMRSpeed log manifolds have both made over 700 HP and TQ. Those setups should be good for 10's. Don't get me worng, the STS cars will beat almost any N.A. street car but compared to other kits they're not quite as quick.
BTW, thanks for the links guys. I've been learning a lot about turbos. LS1tech is particularly good.

im not debating or questioning that. thats a stupid argument to get into anyway, and only the ignorant people who dont understand both sides even bother arguing about it. i know people with both rear and conventional systems, ive worked on both, and this subject is off topic anyway.

I think the point was missed entirely. The guy was just trying to plug his shop and maybe get a few sales. Quite a few people do that on open boards.

It comes down to this: no_turbo < remote_turbo < engine_turbo

Yeah, a remote turbo will make peak HP just like anyother turbo will make peak HP. There just not as streetable in the fact that there is more lag and slightly less HP (design dependant).
In terms of location.......put it where it makes the most sense. The only thing I don't like about the RMT is the oiling system and I have yet to see anyone try a oil & water cooled unit.

I guess that's cool. It would have been better if he posted a link to a trubo car his shop had done. I can put 'turbo ls1' in any search engine and get a list of shops and installers but I don't have any idea what kind of work they've done.

I may have one in my 80 malibu soon... Im going to try the truck mani's and either a big single, or healthy twins, depends on what I have for clearance after the motor is in....

You also need to see the twin turbo vette that also runs deep 9's.

the thing you need to remember is, look at the cost, look at what it takes to install it. 4k to get an LS1 into the low 11's.. thats awesome. You also dont realize STS will build a system for any HP range you are looking for. Nothing is "off the shelf". There are bigger turbo's, pipe upgrades, fuel upgrades.. ect. Dont say that "compaired to other kits, they're not as quick".. because look at the whole package.. STS builds whatever the customer wants for HP. STS sells base kits, then if you need more, of course they build more.

per every PSI you put into the LS1 you get 21hp.. not so with other turbo's.. other turbo's you have to run high boost, more stress on the engine, special headers, bigger 3" exhaust, you have heat in the engine bay, higher intake temps.. i can go on and on..

so when you say better.. better at what? we have a lot of people with 4 digit hp #'s.. its all in the turbo you want and the motor you built.
