Blower Issues Please help.

OK Here is the set up,
886 heads pocketed, and flowed
276/268 adv suration blower cam .5 lift @ valve w/
1.65 ratio full roller rockers,
double roller timing chain,
Camden roots Blower (treat like a 168 B&M Mini Blower)
E4ME with every trick under the sun done to it,
ZZ4 Computer,
ZZ4 chip,
Hooker headers,
3" exhaust,
Police package extra capacity fuel pump,
160 or 180 thermostat
rebuilt distributer,

Here is what it feels like, between 1200-1800 revs if you are cruising it feels as though some one is reaching down and pulling up on the E-brake gently, not enough to slow or stop the car but enough to make it noticable.

(no no one is actually pulling on the E brake while I drive I checked )

I'll include a picture of the motor just because I want to show it off, put alot of work into this puppy , now under acceleration it runs well under Full throttle it is Fast as all hell, will light the tires in 1, 2, 3, and 4th up to 45 MPH. so the isue is crusig speed only...

Just an idea. Maybe you have some fuel issues. Or maybe spark problems....

put a scanner and a wideband on it.

I dont know much about this subject but from what
ive heard you could be dumping in too much fuel and just bogging it way down. Under WOT all the air is mixing as well for a better mixture. Id start with an air/fuel gauge or something of that sort.

That is where i started first. I ran an AFR and found the motor was way way rich so I dropped the secondary side metering rods down 3 steps and leaned the primary out a ton. now I have perfect mixture as far as can be told with an AFR. (wide band). I then attacked my timing and reset it to a conservative 6 DEG. base. backed it down from 12 base (32 total). that eased it up a lot as well. now if the sun is up and out side temps are on the warmer side it seems to run great but as soon as the sun goes down and temps drop it runs cruddy. I was wondering if it is possible the thermostat is too cold, and the carb wwas getting a little PO-ed with the cold air rushing into it... Oh one more thing I noticed with the leaner mixture my idle vacuum tends to bounce about 2" of Hg

Try to keep operating temps around 180*.

I live in NJ so it's pretty chilly up here in the winter. Do you feel a 195 high flow Mr gasket thermostat would do the job?

Sounds like it's too lean at cruise.
Try a needle with a different smaller step at the tip.
The fact that it gets worse as it gets colder supports it being a lean issue. I had a spreadbore setup that would pick up a lean bog on a 1-2 shift in the winter. No change in throttle, just a lite bog on the shift. If was kind've funny. Ran fine with a hair more throttle to get it off the idle/transfer circuit. And chirp the tires-
Try reving it to 1500-2500 in park while listening and feeling.
You should feel it go rough around 1700 and sound different too.
Then clear up around 2200. If so your definitely lean at cruise.

I was suspecting the opposite actually. When I had richer rods in it, it tended to bog more, have less power and tended to have the cutting in and out issue more. So I leaned it out wuite a bit, now it runs great over all, except when engine temps drop. I think I might have screwed up and dropped a 160 stat in it, and now with the really cold weather it runs too cold. I ordered a 195, high flow yesterday. I am going to bump up the temps and re-tune the motor. Now I have a CC-Qjet, to tune it I usually hook up a dwell meter set to 6 cyl mode and tune the carb to run between 30-40 deg. shooting for 35. This always seemed to work with the N/A motor, how ever is it still correct with a Blower motor? The secondaries I believe are running CE rod and a G hanger, righ now. But I have to check to make sure.

Yes, at Idle the tach tends to wonder 200 revs until the engine heats totally up, and ever once in a while once warm it will wander a little. My vacum also bounches between 16"-18". if I richen it up the vacum goes righ to 18" holds solid and the motor feels pretty good, exceot it tends to feel a little lazy.

Sounds like how a carb works.....change parts until you get a happy medium every where in the throttle range.
From how you describe the way it runs, I would say that Z69 is right.
What is a ZZ4 computer? Works with a CC-QJet?

I might have called it by the wrong name, but back in 86 they sold a 350 swap kit for the camaro, i sued the computer from that and the chip from that, I looked at some of the coding and from what I can read it appears that it is a little richer than the factory 305 set up.

Yeah I suppsoe it'll be a balance game, trade a little power for driveability

In any case If any one has any Ideas on How to properly tune the motor other than watch the 02 while I drive it the let me know...

Thanks a again everyone for all the help...

No, a 170 or 180 is much better. Doesn't matter who makes it, as long as it works. You want some heat in the cylinder heads, this promotes more complete combustion, and also evaporates any condensation that formed in the motor while is was sitting.
