Define "Fuel Management Unit," Please? :)

Still working on finding the optimal blower for fabricating a 2.8 Supercharger setup. I think I found something, measly 4.5 boost, but a start, and it says it comes with an FMU, Fuel MAnagement Unit, what the ehck is that? Can it be adapted or is that somethign specific?

Thanks ahead,

-Reno

A FMU is a device that increases fuel pressure in some proportion to boost. For example a 6:1 FMU will increase fuel pressure 6psi for one pound of boost. There are also adjustable FMU's like the one on my buddys Procharged '95 Cobra.

So the FMU should be adaptable to a different engine then it was intended, right?

definition: Fuel = gas, nitro, alcohol, methane, etc...
Management = the a$$hole who bosses you around at work,
Unit = that lil thang between your legs that you pee outta,

All joking aside though,

The FMU that comes with the procharger kits, get plumbed into a vacuum line, for sensing boost, also it is plumbed into the fuel system return line, as the unit starts to sense boost it blocks off the return and raises the fuel pressure in the system, the FMU that came with my procharger kit is adjustable also...
hope this helps,
later,

Sounds like I should be able to plumb it into my V6 fuel lines, even though it's intended for LT1 fuel lines then, right? Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure what the original application of this 4.5 psi boost blower is, but it sounds like it's from a LT1 setup? If so, keep in mind that 4.5 is based on a stock 5.7 LT1.. If you go stuffing that setup onto a mild 2.8 liter engine, you should be able to get quite a bit more boost out of it. Of course it depends on the design limitations of the blower as well, but you will have more than enough airflow capacity.

It's mild now, but I'm building it up a little for it, head job, cam (compucam 2030), 1.6 roller rockers, etc. I figured it would make a little more boost, just want to make sure the FMU will be capable of being patched in.

Its a guess but I'd say yes, you should be able to use it.

On the application it was intended for, it was probably plug and play (plugs in between the fuel rail and fuel line... one of the easiest parts of that cobra procharger install) if those fuel line and fuel rail connections are different on your car, you will have to get some new fuel lines (or adaptors) for the FMU. These should be available from summit.

So do some research and find out if the fuel lines on both cars are the same.

What brand is this system and what car / motor was it designed for?

It's designed for a 4th gen LT1, and made by Powerdyne.

Now THAT'S a good question. I might just drill on the ones that come with it, or I took out my A/C a while ago for weight and horsepower, so I might get a set of 2.8 A/C brackets, and adapt the blower to mount on those somehow. Absolute worst case scenario, a friend of mine is an old-school blacksmith, he can hand forge me whatever I need out of whatever I want, and then just machine it down to make sure the tolerences are right.

I won't really know the next step on the brackets until I have the unit in hand and holding it undr the hood to see.
