"quick and dirty" nitrous setup
"quick and dirty" nitrous setup
Has anybody made their own nitrous set-up? I would like to know what I would need to set up nitrous cheaply on a...let's say a 3.1L camaro. Can anybody help???

I would suggest that you buy a kit. it does not have to be custom made for your application but a simple one fogger nozzle kit would probably work.
I would not suggest that you try to piece something together. the kits come with the MINIMUM you are going to need to put a system together & trying to do it cheaper is not a smart idea. if you are missing any of the parts that come in the kits you are probably risking smoking the motor.
you have to add a certain quantity of gas for air (N2O) so trying to get around any of the items in the kits is just asking for trouble.

I built a kit from a used dry kit for an RX-7. I got the bottle, 14ft line, 18" line, 2 N20 solenoids, a purge kit, and all the misc connectors needed for a dry kit.
Then I bought a New Old Stock NOS wet TPI upgrade kit.. all that is is 2, 18" lines, a Plate w/ Jets, and the bolts and stuff you need to put it on and move your throttle cables.
After that I still needed a Fuel Solenoid (bought a NOS Cheater one), a micro switch, 2 30amp relays, an on/off switch, a momentary switch for the purge, a windows switch and pills, and a lot of 14guage wire..
By the time I was done buying all this stuff.. I could have bought a brand new NX Kit for the same (~$460)..
.. but I have a lot of safety/extra stuff.. the windows switch, purge, two N20 solenoids in series in case one fails open..
It took a decent amount of research to figure out what you need for nitrous to work without buying a kit. I wouldn't recommend doing nitrous "quick and dirty".. that's how you frag your engine. I remember a post on this board a while back where someone didn't have a micro switch so just by-passed it an ended up killing their engine when they forgot to turn off the N20 manually and braked.
But, I still need a bunch of stuff for my setup still:
1. Fuel Pressure Safety (hobbs?) switch
2. Nitrous guage (pillar mounted)
3. Bottle Heater (NX)
4. MSD 6AL
I would recommend an NX kit (that's how I would go if I had the choice to start over, i hear they are really high quality.. I like NOS but some of their stuff seems a little antiquated like their bottle heater and remote opener) and then get the following extra's at a minimum:
1. fuel pressure guage
2. N20 guage
3. F/P safety switch

I don't agree with these two at all. My friend Shawn and I have both put together N2O systems for $100 or less on several different cars. Most of the kit stuff is not necessary, and tuning the N2O is very simple as you can get away with big errors on the rich side (most cars are rich already).
We have done both dry nozzles and wet foggers. The dry systems are usually more effective and simpler in terms of nitrous equipment needed. Your enrichment method is up to you and depends on how big a shot you plan to use.

I would agree with ODB's last statement, it depends on how large a shot you want to go. if the shot is small enough you can just jet the carb/efi FAT & dump the N2O right into it with one cheapy solenoid. this is extreamly problematic though.
if you want it done right & you want tune-ability pony up the extra Do-Ho & get a kit. if you are serious about squeeze you will end up saving money in the end & get the most performance out of it.
if all you want to do is to dump a bit of N2O into the manifold & you dont mind a little risk, give it a whack. the worst that can happen is you blow the motor. probaly not going to happen if common sense is applied.

NOS kit done for 100 dollars? Unless you are buying all used stuff, a new bottle alone will be close to 200. 60-100 for NOS solenoind and so on.
Careful on used bottles, people like to heat them with torches, causing a weak point in the bottle.
