I am intersted, but i am not a 2nd gener. I am a 71 w/essentially a 91 L98. what i would like is a single. I think that probably any kit built for a 2nd gen would probably fit. What i would be intersted in is both headers. both a Shorty for the driver side so that i could loop it down & then back up (local muffler guy) & the pass side that comes up & forward to the turbo. I bet this kind of kit would fit a LOT of SBC's.

That's all fine and dandy, but the problem is creating a kit for all applications. A kit would have to be made for a STOCK L98, similar to current LT1 and LS1 offerings. Because the cars are so old now, most of them are modified far from stock. It is difficult to cater to everyone. I would suggest creating a set of headers, downpipe section, and leave it at that. The fuel system and electronics would have to be up to the customer, and you can't create universal intercooler plumbing because most people have different throttle bodies, intakes, etc. Just my advice. My company offers turbosystems for a few select vehicles, and we have tried several marketing approaches...

GMI,
that is what i meant (i was in a rush, so not so clear). I think that headers are the stumbling block here. most sbc's are about the same right next to the head (not including the vettes), so a header that puts the turbo somewhere near the front of the head, a bit up, & a bit out, ought to cover a bunch of people. the rest is up to them. I am pretty sure that if there was such a thing i would be all over it. I am tempted to buy the Pass side header from turbo technology & deal with the rest. (www.turbotechnologyinc.com). my understanding though is that they want 7 bills for it, that is a bit much for one header if you ask me. I have to call them for confirmation on that though.
I think that you are right though, get someone to build a set of headers that work on a certain gen of car, & i bet they sell like mad.

kind of as a follow up, there seemed to be some pretty good interest in this not a month ago & now it is pretty cold. funny how that works.
maybe, there is not that much interest. once you have been in a turbo or blown car, you are hooked. I would think that with all the excitement over the blower systems that more would be interested in turbo's. i guess that there is still just too much work involved to put one on a car, dont know.
have you guys thought about making such a header? either single with a connection for the crossover from the other bank or just an upside down shorty with the turbo flange that goes forward (I know it is not just that easy, but you get the idea).

I doubt the interest has died. The same 10 people want the same bolt on kit that gets discussed every month or two
Headers could be fairly universal for most SBC turbo apps. The intake from turbo to TB could be universal as well for the TPI TB placement, if it isn't intercooled.
The dump and downpipes would be specific to the chassis, as would intercooler plumbing. Tony @ Charged Air expressed interest in putting together a kit, and I don't know at what price, but his stuff is top notch (shameless Tony DeQuick plug - I've got his low fin density radiator and its gorgeous). I think if you guys got 10 folks together to make atleast a small batch run of headers, it could be fairly reasonable.
Here's a pic of my engine with the Gale Banks headers. Tubular headers that would place the turbos in a similar location (up front and on top) could be universal.

i think we need to give Tony a call a set up something. i hope it's not over 4500. it would be great if we could get a kit to together.

I think a year from now there will be a kit on the market from Tony.
Just a prediction.

Id love a pair of turbo headers like what Andris described. If I could sell my vortech and purchase just A passenger side header, Id handle it all from there. I may even be able to do that. Hmmmm

i plan to do this on my next project ... but its going to be a while (prolly next year) before I actively get into doing this. First I need to make sure the engine gets swapped correctly, the brakes are upgraded, and everything works. Fortunately for me, the engine I want to turbocharge is the LS1 ... and I've seen a few turbo kits for them already. I figgure by next year there will be lots of kits out there for the LS1. I'm still interested in watching your progress tho!!! Im going to need to install an intercooler on my 3rd gen too. If there is anything I can do to help you guys, just shoot me a mail.

Looks like i will probably end up procharged since that turbo tech header wont help since my LT1 alt. will be in the way of the inlet.
oh well maybe a drivers side header also for different apps. ?

I needed to move the alternator and the power steering pump to use the Gale Banks manifolds. It's pretty easy to fabricate brackets, and many companies already offer brackets for moving the accessories into different locations.

Lingerfeler makes a kit for the LS1 vettes, their pricing is for them to install it on a vette. I got a book from them for free just for fun and it shows the engine with the turbo, air lines and intercoolers on it. I think the headers would work (may be wrong) on just about anything then have to do some plumbing modifications depending on if Lingerfelter would sell the header(s) seperately. they look like a shorty header that dump at the back of the engine which would help in heating problems of having the turbo on top of the engine such as earlier pics but those ones look cool.

change in plans for me ... not even gonna try a LS1 swap cuz i've just heard too much bad stuff about it. now im thinking about doing this stuff first:
1.4th gen rearend
2.big brake kit
3.suspension (scca)
4.6 speed swap
5.msd ignition
7.y2k vette wheels
then i want to do some internal work on the engine. so do you guys think the mods above will be able to handle a turbocharged L98?? (will the drivetrain break? will a suspension setup for scca compliment a turbocharged v8 well?) Am i forgetting anything? How much engine work should I have done? I dont want to run more than 1.5 bar boost. finally when the engine is done, i'll sell my 89 RS and try to get some turbos on there. I want to go for a twin turbo setup. sorry for all the questions. i'm really really interested in getting this done. thanks guys!!

you have heard bad stuff about the LS1? like what, it is hard to retrofit i hope. I can not imagine that anyone would have anything bad to say about the performance of them.

yeah its just a real pain in the butt to install and I dont think im at that level yet (to install it myself) ... and even if I paid someone to do it, there would be no guarantee that it'll work. so sad cuz I think the LS1 is a real badass engine ... from a performance aspect they are superior by far. plus you can tell people 'hey i got a ls1' and they go 'woah!' hehhe
but hey you gotta admit a L98 with internal work and turbo's running 8-9lbs of boost on street and 15 at tracks would be pretty fun to drive!!! cant wait to see the look on those import boyz when they get smoked!!!! 300zx, supra, nsx, even the lil crx with B16 swap and turbo ... i gonna call em all out!!

Are they still running down @ Sandy Beach? when i was there all use Windward side boys used to go there to run. everyone would line up in the parking lot or on the grass as we ran toward Sea Life Park from the blow hole side.
If i am not mistaken Kalihi is just on the Honolulu side of the tunnel is it not? you must go down toward Ewa Beach or to Campbels (sp). is that still open?

hehheheh ... those days musta been so much fun!!! now people with modded cars dont even go to sandy beach. there are so many cops there and they hand out recon tickets like candy. i seen people get over 12 tickets at one time just driving through the parking lot!! nowadays lots of crews have their own cruzing spots (gas stations, beach parks, ect) and most of the races take place on the freeway (H1, H2, H3) ... and then there are those of us who only race on the tracks .. either cuz we think its safer or cuz (like me) we got caught racing already and we need to keep our liscense so we can drive to work. heheh
