Spend $1000 for me

Given $1000 to work on my car, show me in order and price of what you would buy to make my car as fast as possible, without NOS or new engine. I was considering shift kit, cam shaft, intake, and 3:73 w/posi. Help me run low 14s or high 13s with a 305 TBI! hehe

Please try to conserve my gas mileage as well :P I get 18.75 mpg (i live in the country) with a 305 TBI, not bad.

I wouldn't do anything besides try to burn up the engine with n2o. 305's are crap go buy a junkyard 350 that runs. Clean it up some and it'll run harder than your 305 with the same gas mileage. Putting 3:73 in it will hurt mileage but you could try to find a junkyard posi that's in good shape for cheap just find one with decent gears.

before you are dissapointed, I want to tell you that that's impossible. I would consider saving up some more cash and build a nice 350 or 383 for $2,000-$4,000. But even then, you'll be adding more $ for headers, exhaust, rear tranny,.... it never ends. get the picture. Don't waste your money on little bs bolt-ons. even gears are worthless, because you'll blow the rear if you ever make real h.p. Do the gears when you blow old rear or when you get a real motor. No offense meant, but just realize, it's not gonna happen w/ $1,000

I'm going to be 17 in a month.
How did you feel about power at age 17?
What was your monetary stance at age 17?

Maybe spend the $1000 on another eye, Jack. That way you can change your name to "Normal number of eyes Jack". :P

IN response to your actual question. I would go for a change of cam and try and find a TPI set up from a breaking yard.

I just turned 18 yesterday. I have worked hard for my cars, but I'm glad that I have. Why are you steering away from N2O? If you do it right it's not as hard on your engine as people generally think. It's a rush and as of now I'm only running 75 shot. I say spray it and save up and later on get a 350 to build later on. Good luck on whatever you choose.

OK, for less than a bill: Get the Posi unit from SLP for $75, but dont put anything lower than 3.50 gears in with the auto. Then scrounge a 93-94 LT1 cam, I just sold one for $40 shipped. The LT1 cam is a nice step up from the stock 305 or 350 TPI cam. Get a TPI unit put together, and get it on there when you do the cam change. If you dont get the LT1 or TPI cam in there it will knock a lot with the TBI cam. I feel I could easily do all this for less than $1000 with some easy scrounging and performing the labor myself. Dont forget to do the usual porting mods to the TPI unit to enhance performance before you put it on, an airfoil and AFPRegulator. When I was 17 I was a master scrounger of parts, I could have easily gathered this stuff in a months time, and had it on in a week. 12 years later I could gather it in about a week but take at least six weeks to put it on.

If you are really against NOS which would be like 450 I would:

1. Get a cat back and high flow converter about 250 total.. Plus on normal driving you'll get better mileage, I would then get headers and a solid ignition system and shift kit for fun.. Still leaves you enough for a locker or posi.

Take the motor! if you can do the swap your self if not you will go over your budget on the install.

dont take the motor unless it's a tpi. Find one of those. But, you'll likely spend more than a grand w/ the extras you'll have to or want to do after the swap. A stock 350 won't be that much better, unless you do all the boltons like exhaust and such. exhaust is like another grand.

You'd better make sure it isn't a 305 'cause 350s weren't available in 3rdgens until '87! The guy I bought my '85 Z28 from tried telling me it was a 350. I knew better, but I wanted the car and bought it anyway. From the outside, its very difficult to tell the two apart. Also, what kind of intake does it have?

Its probably an LG4! Even if its an L69, I don't think you want it!!! Of course you didn't say if it was the original motor or not. Someone may have swapped in a 350.

I'd go with headers and a cat-back exhaust along with an open element air cleaner.

I'd then advance the timing to 10* advanced.

If you have any $ left over, then go for a 2000 stall converter and shift kit.

Look at my sig...I have less than $1000 in mods so far, and I'm going low 14's regularly with a personal best of 13.98 @ 100MPH.

Just shows that its all in knowing what works and what doesn't.

Get a plan, stick to it and think ahead. If your going to get a bigger engine one day, plan for it with the headers and other things that you can use now.

Car: 87 Monte Carlo SS
Engine: 89 IROC 350 TPI
Transmission: 700R4 rebuilt w/TCI kit
Axle/Gears: 9" from 57 ranchero unsure gears.
If you know enough about adding your own cam, rear end, shift kit or other basic to semi major mechanical work shop around for the whole package I bought a trashed 89 iroc for like 1300 pulled eng/trans sold rest of the car had about 700 in the eng/trans/wiring I didnt install mine in another 3rd gen so I didnt need the Borg Warner rear end with discs (should have kept) plus about anouther 300 in parts Ihad it running so there is your grand in parts there you end up with the complete thing, mine ran awesome I decided to rebuild it about a year ago and mostly due to valve seals that were leaking.
here is just a good option

------------------
'87 Monte Carlo SS,with '89 IROC 350,700 trans, blew up 3.73 posi stuck with crappy 2.73's neeed gears! hooker headers, flowmaster 2 1/2" exhaust true dualls, recently installed a set of alum vette heads 58cc, new cam for a paxton, recently installed paxton, OMG need a posi bad. So if anyone knows where a buick GN 8.5" rear is let me know.

Spend your $1000 on a blue chip tech stock that's been pounded recently. They're bound to become more successful, which is more than I can say for your 305.
Nothing wrong with the 305, you can make enough power, but unless you need to be different... Maybe consider a REAL 350.
I remember my days of wanting to buildup a 305. It's a hard feeling to kick, but sensibilities have to play a part sooner or later.

Use the nitrous and blow the ****ty 305 through the roof.... and have a lot of fun doing it. thats $500, good deal on used headers w/ air $200, Y pipe 100, catback 200.... now you have a perfect exhaust for a 350, + you have a nitrous kit for the 350 (i would only use it when you are getting beat). I have a 305 and i would love to have about a 100 hp nitrous system, the ****ty 305 smokes like a bitc* at start up, and id love to pump nitrous through its veins...lol I WANNA MAKE IT EXPLODE!! god i hate my 305!!!
