3rd gen homemade turbo
3rd gen homemade turbo
ok ive seen some pics on remote mounted turbos and even twin turbos under the hood. Ive also seen and heard you can make your own turbo set up at home for a relatively in-expensive price compared to a complete kit. I am curious as to what I would need to go out and get my own turbo kit and some do's and dont's please. If you got a power adder on your turd gen post up

The first and most important step IMO is doing your homework. Turbo system design and installation is way too in depth for you to get the info spoon fed to you.

Tubing, Mig Welder, junkyard turbo and a rebuild kit. My cousin was doing it to his stang before he decided 450hp was enough.

How are you going to build a turbo system if you can't even figure out what parts you need?

Do post what you intend to do with the car: race or street
Do post if you want to run race fuel

Anyway, stick with twin T3s or twin T3/T4 hybrids or twin small Holsets or go with a single T6 or Holset HX.
it has nothing to do with disrespecting but i make a simple turbo column and get crap for it. If you dont wanna answer or have nothing to add to this thread then dont respond. I dont see how getting negative response like i did has helped me atall.
Thanks for the reply.

What are you planning, a stock 5.0L or a stock 5.7L? TPI or TBI intake motor? The year might help also. I think the 1989 TPI has the biggest cam of them all and would give the most HP with the turbo(s).
89JYTurbo has an excellent write up / thread about his homebuilt (that looks factory) twin turbo setup he made. I did a thread about a homebuilt twin setup that I made (it is a second gen. though) but has some decent turbo info in general in terms of engine setup stuff. My second gen setup is a lot like 89JYTurbo's setup.
There is also a couple of threads dedicated to turbo 305ci that should be recent within the last month. There is a thread at the top called "show your power adder" or something with lots of turbo pics. There are a few threads of 3rd gens with turbos and carbs also that are recent. The threads will help you decide on if you want to use EFI or carb.
BTW, if you go with twins and buy from Ebay.......you will have to compete with all the import drivers with the dream to go single turbo. The sad part is that they jack up the prices and never use the turbo anyway. They usually just get re-sold......horse traders looking for a Stallion, but all riding Donkeys.
Once you decide on what you want for turbos, check the local junkyards first.

i dont want anything too drastic. I have the L98 TPI on a 1991 camaro. Id like to have a possible 50-100 horses and will rebuild the motor if neccessary considering motor is already out and busted

I used this thread the most, just b/c I went the single route.
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/powe...o+IROC+project
For some pretty good general info on how to get started, try this one.
If you are new, read this info on getting started
Also, since no one has mentioned this yet, the books Turbochargers by Hugh Macinnes and Maximum Boost by Corky Bell have very good information on what you need for turbocharging your vehicle.
Like it has been said a few times, the most important thing to do is to research before you begin anything else. It cost you nothing and can save you money down the line. Read the turbo build-up threads and books, and you'll know what you need to do to successfully turbocharge your car.
I included my build-up component list just so that you can get an idea of a lot of the parts that you'll need to purchase (and some you don't since you're fuel injection). I would've posted my senior project report that I just finished on my project, but it is .6MB too big (.pdf).
Good luck! =)

You haven’t asked any questions that haven’t been discussed in detail around here and for the life of me, I don’t know why people are at all interested in doing a search for you and then posting links.
Judging from the stuff on your linked your web site at least your consistently stupid and lazy, at the very least at least get your kids some ear muffs rather then damaging their hearing and posting pics and comments about it:
“That is one of my kids. I know he doesnt look happy but when your standing right next to the race lanes behind the fence and the pro street cars are doing the qualifying runs then I wouldnt look happy either. It is LOUD. He really likes it though I promise. “

I never asked anyone to go out of there way for me. If someone has time to post sumpin up about it then cool...if not that is also cool. Im in no hurry. Go tkae your attitude to somewhere else please. It isnt welcome here at all. Seems this site ive gotten more attitude then anything else.
