best/easiest way to retard timing 2 degrees for 100shot???
I'm new to nitrous. I've done my homework and I've got the safety stuff. I'm installing it on friday and starting out with a 50 shot and will work up to 150. I've never messed with timing before. I've got a hypertech chip, and would like to keep that if at all possible. Someone mentioned turning the dristributer, and someone else said, get a retard box.
what's the best way to do this?

"Why StockBastard?" you might ask. Well...
84 Berlinetta body w/custom paint.
92 front/rear bumper and ground affects.
89 IROC 350tpi engine w/lots of mods.
87 3.73 possi rear w/disk brakes.
86 interior w/IROC dash.
And finally, stock Vet rims from the early 70s.(same ones used on the 69ss)
ALL IN ONE CAR!!!

personally, if youve got a little extra cash, l think the best way to keep it safe with nitrous, is to see if you can get your hands on a MSD 6A box, and a timing box with an adjustable ****, that way when youre not running nitrous you can take full advantage of the chip youve got, and when you are, you can be as safe as possible. personally I think thats the best way to do it. if you dont have the extra cash and you just want to retard the baseline timing, you need a timing light, the directions, and a 9/16 distributor wrench. now the way that l did the timing worked but you might wanna check with some other people before you go ahead and do it.
step 1: hook up the light
step 2: start the car
step 3: unplug the timing clip (it's a black clip, right by the A/C condensor, it has a tan lead with a black stripe on it, the clips about an inch long when connected)
step 4: shine the light at the h/b check the timing
step 5: loosen the distributor bolt, and adjust the cap accordingly, check the h/b reading with the light
step 6: once you have the timing set properly tighten the dist. bolt
step 7: check timing with light one last time (sometimes when tightening it it'll move a little on you)
step 8: shut off the car, remove timing light, plug in the timing clip.
step 9: start the car
step 10: youre all set to go
if anyone has any better ideas or suggestions please state them. thats the way l adjusted my timing and it worked out just fine. everything works well, its just that l advanced my timing rather than retarded it.
hope this helps

Thanks, anyone else? Are there any other ignition boxes out there that do what the MSD does but cheaper?

All you need is MSD's adjustable timing module. One is made specifically for the GM HEI ignition. I use this module with my Jacobs Pro-Street ignition. I posted a pic of my center console on an unrelated subject at:
https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/001145.html
but this pic shows the timing module with my custom-made faceplate. The indicators on my faceplate are in total degrees advance. Adjusting timing is as simple as turning the ****.
