Why would you turbo and supercharge an engine?

I was watching the tractor and trailer pulls the other day and they said that one of the rigs had a turbo AND a super chagered engine. Doesn't that sound like over kill? The only thing i can think of is that the huge turbo will spool up very slowly (and it did, you could hear it) so the use a super charger to get the exhaust velocity up quickly so the turbo spools up sooner. I think they said that these engines were putting out 10K HP!!! Thats nuts!! Does anyone have some insight on these things?

If you think about it, that would be the ideal setup for getting that much power out of the engine. The supercharger would give it the initial umph that it needed, and the turbo would kick in at higher rpms to give it the high-end horsepower (hence, the 10k mark you mentioned)

And the Camaro said to the Civic "Now, I know what you're thinking...in all of that mess, did he have 8 cylinders, or only 6? You just gotta ask yourself one question...do you feel lucky? Well do ya....punk???

Detroit Diesel, for many years, used a roots style blower and turbo(or multiple turbos) on their 2 stroke diesel engines...

So no, i wouldn't say that it is overkill, just another way to make alot of power.

I remember a guy that was friends with my girlfriend, and was trying to impress her by telling her about his 4 door Grand Am that apparently had a turbo and supercharger! Haha! He said he had B&M custom make all of it! Little did he know, I know a moderate amount about forced induction.
He said that his hood wouldn't open because of an accident (?), and I couldn't see the engine, though.
Must have been hard to install all that with a jammed hood! Liar!

I thought it was pretty darn cool... but not as impressive as the quad turbo setup i saw in a zine a few months back.

WOOOOOHOOOOO!
Bet that'll make the ol' go-cart go! Big block Chevy?
Looks like there are two shorty headers, used as intake manifolds. I'm sure they're not headers, but it looks like it...

Just wanted to clarify this, 'cause I've heard this mentioned a lot (the turbo/SC thing). A two-stroke diesel engine, such as a Detroit, will not be able to take in enough air to run in "naturally aspirated" form.

These engines must use an air blower (which is virtually identical to a roots style SC) to move air to the cylinders. This blower does not actually supercharge the engine, it just provides fresh air to the cylinders when the ports are open.

So, a turbocharger can be used in addition to the blower in order to actually provide boost. The blower has a bypass valve which allows the turbo's boost pressure to flow past the rotors when the turbo spools up.

So technically, it is just an air blower, and not a supercharger.

(I've been working on these engines the past few weeks at tech college )

Yup, thats the engine i am talking about... do you think i can fit that under my hood

Its a rather inpressive setup... o-ringed EVERYTHING so he can rebuild it quickly. The passenger side lower turbo just barely fits. It is actually inbetween the suspension!!!

I saw Mike Moran try to run that motor at the worldstreetnmationals in Orlando and it could get no traction at all, I think the dyno #'s were 2190 HP. But the engine has already been banned by the sanctioning bodies (Orlando was the only race to allow it) So we won't get any et's anytime soon.
And like Omega said It's completely o-ringed and uses NO gaskets at all....
