turbo spool up VS ign timing???

last weekend i burnt up my transmission on the dyno while attempting to spray a 50 shot with 10 psi of boost.
2 days ago i installed a new trans/ and flushed/cleaned my stall converter.
well i was having some detonation issues, due to running lean 13.0-13.7 afr's under wot/full boost(due to the 40* drop in air temps).
so i pulled some timing to temporaily fix the detonation issues until i have time to take care of the lean condition)
my timing used to be 16* base with the stock timing curve.
I pulled 8*'s out and now my turbo is spooling really fast at part throttle loads
would this be due to pulling the timing out or could this be another effect of the colder weather?

the trans/and pulling timming out are the only things that have changed on the car other then the ambient air temps droping

The theory goes that retarding timing will spool quicker. Since the exhaust is hotter becuase of the late timing then the turbo gets more energy to spool. Some of the race guys use this to spool the turbo off the line and bring timing back in once under way.

if this is true, couldn't you have the ecm retard the timing until it sees boost, then bring it back up?

Yes, that is how it is done. Keep in mind the exhaust valves are also taking a beating from the heat.

thnx man,ill have to bump so timing back into the motor then, cause even under very light low rpm loads this thing is spooling up on me killing my gas milage, though with so much timing pulled the top end sux lol
