Weekend Driver to Big Single Engine
ive been toying around with engine ideas for a while now...ive come to a conclusion that i want to stick with the following setup
4.125" bore dart little M block (to avoid rebuild oppsies)
3.8" Eagle 4340 crank
6" Eagle rods
H beam Eagle pistons
etc. (forged and strong)
now, the complication is building an engine that can make good power on its own and requires little to transform for a turbo
i was thinking of using dished pistons that with 64cc chamber heads would give me a 10:1 cr and a mild turbo cam...so that when im ready to install a single turbo setup all i would need is a "simple" head swap to some AFR eliminator 220 76cc heads and drop the CR to roughly 9:1
any other thoughts or ideas that would make this idea more probable or easy?
thanks in advance

My advice is IF your going to run it NA for a while then I would buy a regular cam... Then when you go turbo and change heads get a cam matched to what you are doing..
There is no Magical turbo cam that will run GOOD on an NA 10.1 to 1 compression motor with smaller heads and also run GOOD on a single turbo different headed 9.0 to 1 motor... youll find cam that will technically RUN both..but both stages of your project will likely suffer.. In the long run it wont cost but maybe 300 more to do what Im talking about.AND you could RESELL the NA cam and make at least half of the 300 for the NA cam back.. ..and youll be much happier during the transition period..
The dart block is a great investment.. I have one myself... Wouldn't roll any other way..

thx for the advice
its knowledge like that..that i am seeking...im still trying to figure out the confusing world of camshaft selection and information and that really helps
i was thinking of trying to use my l98 heads and maybe pay a little money out of my budget to have them reworked and ported but retain the actual turbo pistons that i plan on using...so i can do the cam and head swap with the motor in the car
this might be a bland question but what all does it take to go from an EFI setup to carb? its mainly removing things correct?

Ill refrain from answering the efi to carb thing...Mainly because my carb knowledge is lacking.. My turbo setup is EFI... So I assume your turbo setup your going to try to do a BLOW THRU carb setup???
BUT your TPI heads would be choking the setup a little BUT with a dished piston the CR should be low enough that you should be fine.. I would not go out and buy a set of heads just for an interim project...
Cam selection.. For the 383 NA you should be able to just call a cam MFGR...they will have an off the shelf affordable solution to get ya by..
For the turbo setup... I talked to as many people as I could and then had a custom one ground .. it was more expensive but well worth it...

this will be a 406ci motor...im kinda wondering if i should go ahead and go with a 414ci bc the dart little m block can accept a 3.875 stroke crank and im leaving the bore at 4.125 for strength...so its kinda like why not just get a slightly bigger stroke and a bit more power
Im trying to figure out what i want to do for heads...i need around 220 to 230 cc heads for the size of the engine and power i want to make...should i just try to pick up some cheap iron heads or what?
since its a Sunday (i work allday sat.) driver, i have decided to go with a pretty aggressive cam to make good power...a hydraulic roller 240/245 LSA 108
sound drivable for the street?
