Anyone using roots & turbo together?

I've heard a couple of people say they were going to try this, but I'm curious if anyone actually has done this?

Re: Anyone using roots & turbo together?

That's a lot of hot air. You would be better off with just the turbos.

Look up the Lancia Delta S4 rally cars, they ran turbos and superchargers on the same motor. Very interesting theory behind it, I think it could work well but I don't have the time to R&D it myself.

I saw ricks car several times in the mid 80's.........very nice don't know how well it ran though, I saw him cruising in it a couple of times but never saw or heard of him running it.

Re: Anyone using roots & turbo together?

How are those turbos plumbed in??? It looks like they are plumbed right into the bug catcher scoop and the only way the turbos would create boost is if the butterflies was shut. Any info on this setup? I mean does he have a way to keep the butterflies shut and use boost from the turbos and supercharger and be able to open the butterflies for normal cruising and just use the supercharger? Am I the only one who sees this? Look at it real close! It looks like he has a rod connecting the turbos to the butterflies...wonder how it all works??? Upon farther inspection the carbs sit on the turbos so it is not a blow through system and it seams to me that the butterflies on the scoop would have to be sealed closed at all times...what a really really weird set up IMO...I am just a weeeeeeee bit confused, LOL!

I would imagine it is sectioned off....I was never close enough to see how it worked when it was running. His J-2000 had a little more intricate setup on it than the nova did.

Re: Anyone using roots & turbo together?

There is a company doing it to the 03-04 cobras. They throw two turbos on and keep the supercharger. Its called compound boost.

Re: Anyone using roots & turbo together?

Ah compound boost, thats what they call it. I would think roots and turbos would complement each quite nicely, lowend torque and throttle response and insane turbo high end. I remember reading (another post?) about a vette with a 142 or 177 blower and the guy wanted to put a turbo on it.

Re: Anyone using roots & turbo together?

Or just go with a giant turbo and N2O to spool it. It is cheaper and will give high HP for a given compression ratio.

Re: Anyone using roots & turbo together?

Look at a detroit diesel its nothing new very old design. The roots blower will compress the air it is gven. So if its getting atmospheric pressure which is 14.7 psi ant sea level it may bump it up to 21 or 22, if it gets 21 or 22 it may push it up to 30 or so. It is called compound boost like previously stated. Helps the turbo's spool faster also due to the fact the blower pushes air in initially.

Re: Anyone using roots & turbo together?

I don't remember for sure but I think it was Subaru that was developing a twin charger for one of their cars. I think it used some kind of gate or valve to shut out the supercharger once the rpms got high enough to spool up the turbo. I'll try and find a link... Saw it in Popular Science I think.
