Advice for my 3.1l turbo project
Hi All, I have a 1991 3.1l and Im turbocharging, go to www.cardomain.com , search for excellegions, and see the progress, Im running into problems though. The oil from the turbo is comming out of the turbine housing and into the exhaust, causing alot of smoke. Now, I think I know why, Im feeding the oil from the top of the turbo and I understand that the oil is gravity driven, however with a k member in the way, the oil pan is not going to come off without lifting the engine, so I couldn't create a drain into the pan. I tried draining the oil through the valve cover. *If my theory is correct, the turbo isn't draining as fast as it's getting fed and is flooding, causing is to bleed into the turbine housing. I need advice, Is this what's happennig? What alternativese are there? Is there anyway to get a drain into the pan without lifting the engine?

I checked out your cars on cardomain. That's a nice collection you've got going. Try restricting the oil feed line using nitrous jets or a restrictor fitting. You most likely have too much oil going to the turbo.
Is there any place on the 3.1 oil pan that you could punch a hole? You'll want at least a 10an drain line and as straight downhill as possible.

What's wrong with drilling the pan?? Just overfill the sump and pack grease around your drill bit and you're all set. If you want to be extra careful, don't overfill the sump but have a partner use a shop vac right behind your bit (take out the dipstick to create more suction out of the pan)
What type of fitting do you have to attach to the pan?
You can weld even use JB weld if you scuff the pan really well.

dont drill the pan you wont be able to tap it after... use a round pric punch and punch a hole just smaller than the tap you are going to use to thread the 10an fitting in then pack the tap with heavy grease to collect chips... but DO NOT DRILL

Agreed, don't drill your oil pan. Punch it, then tap w/plenty of pack grease to catch most of the shavings. Immediately drain the oil once finished, and throw on a magnetic drain plug w/the fresh oil for added insurance (they work, believe me)....

Hello Lee,
Dont drill the pan also, punch it! What I do is that I get a bulkhead #10 AN fitting and once I punch the oil pan I remove all the bolts in the pan, the two engine mount bolts and raise the engine all I can. Then I place the bulkhead from the inside out with silicone sealant and lock the nut on the bulkhead real hard. The fitting will not loose inside the engine and it will not leak nor there are no chances for small metal particles that might be loose even after the oil change and magnet catch. I believe that is the best way to do it without removing the oil pan out of the car.

HEY BERMUDEZ ! ! !
Did ya see the pics!? It's a hard 90* pipe, but it works for now, is there any way I can do this without removing the pan?? Can't I just punch the hole while the engine is still in the car, make the hole small so that I would have to force or swist the bulkhead in, and rtv/jb weld around the outer part of the it??
And can you find the right bolts for the header?? I have some allen ones but I can't get them tight, and using an allen key isn't fun, the header is to big for an allen 3/8 socket, what did you use??

Re: Advice for my 3.1l turbo project
Lee,
I sent you an email with pics.
I used also allen bolts in all my turbo header installations. Same thread as the V6 needs, but propper lenght. Be sure that the lenght is the propper one, not too long. I know is no fun threading in allen bolts 1/4 or even 1/8 turn at a time but those bolts are the best. What I do for this cases is that I have several allen keys cut to several lenght sizes that make install much more easier. Also do not try to thread in one bolt then the other, do all at the same time. That way you will drive the header uniformly and the bolts will not jam.
