L98 TPI turbo help?

Hi guys i have a 87 trans am with the l98 350 tpi motor. I am wanting to put a single rear mount turbo on it. What all should i need to do this and What should i get turbo size wise and everything. Im looking for a cheap little to mild performance adder. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Or if there is any simple mods to do on this engine to make good power. heads, runners, exhuast, injectors, maf, etc.?

It all depends on what you want. But if your interested in a rear mount turbo set up give STS Turbo Systems a call. They can set you up.

Re: L98 TPI turbo help?

see i did but that seems like a lot for that system. I have a turbo from a 2.0 dsm it pushed 6 lbs of boost on his car and that wasnt turned up. So if anything i could already have the system working with that turbo. but idk what like needs to e done to say the motor in order to handle of help a turbo?

Umm that turbo on a 350 would probably acheive full boost at like 1500rpm lol. you would need at least a T70 turbo ....The rear mount STS kits come with T67s. It may be alot easier to do a rear mount but I would Deff build a front mount setup. buy S10 headers and slip them, or 98 Truck manifolds, or even SSAC junk if u wanted. (from what ive read on the turbo forums some people run there headers without issues but Im building mine.

Re: L98 TPI turbo help?

I just finished a complete setup with a t-76 on a 383. I have mulitiple pictures on my threads of all of it as I built it. Look under lt1z350 posts and it is the single turbo set up links.

I like yours its simple but i dont want a under hood turbo. It builds to much heat under the hood as it is so that is not even gonna happen. Ok now how much will say a t-70 cost or i could i find one on a junkyard car or truck or diesel?

Re: L98 TPI turbo help?

I have a friend with a mustang that I copied his set up some what. I am wrapping all pipe with header wrap as he did and his under hood is no hotter that way than with a set of long tube headers. Not going to push it on you just stating that if it is all wrapped is actually very cool. All but turbo and actual small header tubes gets wrapped. Any way I would go with a master power t-70 as it is cheap and a good turbo. new it is 580 used if you can find one normally 400. My buddy with the mustang started with it and made 550 rwhp on a stock bottom 302 with afr 165 heads and a very small cam. Guys have got into the 9s with that on a 302. For perfofomance turbos out back arent the greatest. lag is normally very long as it takes time to move the air all the way up. Also have to pump oil from the turbo back to the engine from the drain and if that pump fails can loose the seals in the turbo in a flash as the oil pressure will blow them right out. Lot to deal with for not a ideal setup.

Re: L98 TPI turbo help?

Yeah it seems like it would be but then you dont have to make everything so tight under the hood and plus you dont have to run an intercooler cause of all the intake it cools the air and its getting air from under the car.
