Intercooler Causing Overheating, Solutions?

The other day I was mounting up my intercooler to test the fitment. I decided to leave the intercooler mounted up to see how engine temperature was when I drove around. Engine temperature stayed between 160 and 220. Which is a lot higher than it is without the intercooler. I have a manual fan swith that I never used until now. How can I fix this heating problem? How can I make it so the radiator gets more cooler air? Do you guys with intercoolers have engine heat problems then? I just bought a new radiator less than a year ago with out any heating issues until now.

Pictures?

Sounds like you're blocking too much radiator airflow if you think between 160 and 220 is a problem. Need to find a way to get more air to/through the radiator.

I removed the fog lights to let more air through. I was thinking of using some some flex tubing to force more air to the radiator somehow.

Could help.

What temp does the fan come on? Because if it gets up to 220 then cools off... its fine. Its when you cant get the temp back down.

Re: Intercooler Causing Overheating, Solutions?

It was a 90 degree day yesterday and it went up to 220 briefly when i was cruising at 25 mph. The fans kick in automatically around 160-190 degrees. I am not sure about the thermostat. Whatever is in there, it is stock. Normally my car temp would be at 100-130 degrees when I drive around even during the summer months last year. Then now it sits at 160-180 when I drive normally.

Stock thermo is 195
I dont see how you were cooling that low pre-IC
I suspect a faulty gauge

I'll have to take a picture of the gauge with and without the intercooler.

Re: Intercooler Causing Overheating, Solutions?

Did you leave a gap between the IC and the airdam? I left an inch on mine and its working fine. Getting air to the radiator via the airdamn is critical on our cars.

I think that could be the problem with me. I just checked and the intercooler is about 1/4 inch away from the air dam.

I don't see any problems with your car. A 195 stat will make the car run upwards of 220.

Re: Intercooler Causing Overheating, Solutions?

I fixed the problem. I made the gap between the air dam and the intercooler to more than an inch. The larger gap helped, so thanks for the help.

Well if it ever bothers you again, get an aftermarket temp gauge, and a 160* stat. Maybe an aluminum rad.

Your car warmed up a lot higher than 130*...unless you run methanol as a fuel.

Re: Intercooler Causing Overheating, Solutions?

I have the exact same intercooler, and in the exact same place...lol... I have a new aluminum rad that is narrower but about three times thicker then factory and I don't have any problems keeping it cool.
