What are some nice HP Adders for a 2.8L?
Hey there,
Id really like to beat my buddies 3.8L Supercharged 1995 Buick Riviera lol. Which has alot...lot...more HP than my own. However id like to show him up by putting some dough under the hood on my 2.8L. Id like to know what I could do to my 3rd Gen Firebird to make her go! go! go!
I can see that I have a weight advantage, as his car would be closer to 3800lbs, and mine about 3200lb(does that sound about right?)
I can afford to take the A/C out bc it doesn't work anyways... but I also have a sound system in it lol, prob adds about 40-50lbs.
What else could I do guys? Im willing to pay a decent amount

Decent adder for a 2.8L...??? Weld on another 2 cylinders and bore / stroke it
Seriously, maybe headers, cam, stoker crank (do they make those for a V6??). You could always go nuts and transplant a grandnational driventrain in. Thats not really sticking with the 2.8 theme but atleast it's still a V6.

Lmao thanks AC.
Im not sure if it makes a big difference... but my f-bird also has considerably bigger tires on the rear than on the fronts. Is that going to be a disadvantage bc I need more torque to spin those babies?
Heres a pic of the tires. Wish I had a clearer persprective to show u guys the actual differences in size.

well I dont see how you're not beating him because clearly your tires have the "turbo" stamp on them. Thats good for 150hp right there. just kidding.
Yank that engine and put in a stout 355 w/some decent heads and you'll have no problem takin him down. Nothin fancy either, just some Chevy 5.7" pink rods, cast steel crank (scat, whoever), TRW forged pistons, decent heads, hydraulic cam (nothin crazy) and you'll have no problem whatsoever. If you're going to buy a rotating assembly might as well buy a 383 kit.
Best thing to do is post how much you want to spend...
btw, how bad is he beating you?

LOL I WOULD LOVE to throw a 355 in there BDR, but im trying to keep the gas consumption low. I know that aiming for better gas milegas really ruins the whole sense of getting more HP. They kinda phase one another out...
I was just wondering if anyone knows any ways to have low gas mileage and good HP adders work together?
Price range around 1200?
Oh and we are pretty even off the start, I usually have a bit on him but than his supercharger engages at whatever speed I think and than he starts to sonder on by with excessive speed.

50-75 HP wet shot.
I put a single nozzle 75 kit on my 3.1 and it woke that thing right up. I dont know what it does for your race, but it pleased me.

you can get a nitro kit for the 2.8's atleast some years. its a 50hp +/- kit. and you can put a cam in some of the 2.8's from an S-10 or some crap, more torque.
I got 107HP 134,k on it and 215/65/15 in back, 215/70/14 in front "poor so its mismatched" I smoked the hell out of one of em when my trans was acting funny and stalling on me.

nos is probably your best option for a 1200 price range. first do a full tune up if you havent already, including fuel filter and dcap/rotor. dropping weight is worth a little bit and it can be cheap sometimes. in the v6 forum there is a sticky on aftermarket parts for the 2.8 and 3.1. i believe melling makes a mild cam, not sure about the heads. i know some people on here are putting 3400 heads on a 3.1, i dont know the specifics though. check out the v6 forum, cus most people here are gonna tell you put a v8 in it.

Re: What are some nice HP Adders for a 2.8L?
Would I need to change a few parts of the engine to be able to take the power and force of the added turbo?
What would be a good brand of turbo to buy for a 2.8L?
and how is the installation?

a rebuild? and there aren't many "performance" parts like for a 350, you can get better rockers, anything else i'm not sure. but don't think you can get something like better pistons.
New fuel pump? and just a lot of maint.
Anyway, i'm fast becoming useless in here so i'm ouit of this topic. Thanks for dealing with me.

Re: What are some nice HP Adders for a 2.8L?
the motor will take the boost just fine.the factory bottom end is good for 400hp and 7k rpms.
the install is pretty stright foward,if u just gonna gun 7-9 psi of boost alls u really need to change are the stock injectors.look in the v6 section i have 2 full writeups on how to do it, we currently have a few members going turbo v6
