Looking for an intercooler idea
I have enjoyed running a S/C but after running a thermistor in the Air horn, I have found I would like to cool off the intake charge.. The only way to do this is to run an intercooler. I would like to use (AIR to AIR).. I know I need to run 3" pipes to and from the intercooler and have to weld all the pipes. I will send them out to have them chromed later as it makes the air go faster... LOL just kidding but it looks better. 2 basic questions are where can I get pipes that already mandrell prebent that I just have to weld and an intercooler.

Re: Looking for an intercooler idea
I purchased all my intercooler components from ebay. Get the largest air to air intercooler that you will be able to fit in the car. Also, J-bends make it easy to cut and weld any angles you need for the plumbing. I recommend silicone couplers with T-clamps, even though they cost a little more than the rubber ones with the cheapo clamps. I had the rubber ones tear and the worm-style clamps strip out.
What iat's were you reading under normal driving and at wot? I checked out your cardomain .. very nice ride!

Re: Looking for an intercooler idea
go on ebay and find cxracing companies store. then find the size of intercooler you want and they even sell kits with intercooler, tbolt clamps, silicon coupler, and diff angle bent piping. its all really cheap from there you dont need to weld i used the kit and just used coupler with 1 extra coupler i had to pick up to complete it but had left over piping its a nice quality kit A LOT of people use them and ive never heard anything bad about them. if you get a 31x12x3 like me you may or may not need to do some cutting because im not sure how the camaro front end is setup. the intercooler i have i listed above cools the air as cool if not colder than outside temps. and if you plan to use 3" piping thats the size the kit uses if your battery is in stock location and route the piping through the fender holes youll most likely need to move the battery either towards the headlights and radiator or relocate it inside the car.

31x12x3 Its the CXracing one from ebay, alot of guys use them. They look pretty nice too. My buddy has one on his cougar with no issues. Actually ended up gaining 1psi after installing it. Didnt drop or leak.

BUT you could throw on one of those CO2 packages that apparently cool the intercooler by douching it with cold gas. I've never seen or heard of anyone using them but I know their being sold by EdelB and a few other companines. Maybe their crap, maybe their good.... Member

Re: Looking for an intercooler idea
i run the same intercooler set up on mine with no problems and now supporting over 600 rwhp on 7 lbs. i got my pipe off ebay too and it was a universal kit shipped out of cali and still got extra pipe after doing the car. comes with clapms and couplers but might drop the price if u dont need them. I have in the past used nos with a spray bar across the intercooler on a supra we had on the dyno at work and sh*t u not picked up 50rwhp by chilling it. local supra guys been doing that for years. I just look at it this way if i want 50 more hp turn up the boost 2 lbs. lol anyway that intercooler will work good for what u are looking to do.

i have a 29x12x3.5 intercooler from innovative turbo. i paid 1100 for it and would like to sell. its got 2.5" in the side 2.5" out the back or front depending on how you flip it and a vband flange on the out side for a bov. it take 600 + shipping. can post pics. it was for the t72 i had but got rid of in favor of a gtb t88. wich is too large for the interclooler.

cause mine will hold more than 20 lbs and with a lot less pressure drop. and that is good for more power

and to the guy with less pressure drop and hold more boost these cxracing intercoolers have been proven to do the same for a lot less. mine has very very little pressure drop and can hold serious boost proven by many many people who run them.

Re: Looking for an intercooler idea
yea ive seen a procharger intercooler explode at 14 lbs 3 times. sometimes you get lucky sometimes you dont. i just figured a true bar and plate front mount would be worth half of what i paid. but i might just keep it for my camaro build up with a 72mm. or 76mm.

It must have been a bad manufacturing run to get 3 different intercoolers to fail.

Re: Looking for an intercooler idea
Ok finally got the front end gutted so I can trial fit the intercooler. It is tight but fits. I have an idea of how to run the piping on the drivers side. But, the passenger side of the car is going to be a trick. As far as I can figure if you bring the 3" pipes on the passenger side, Everything will hit the battery. Does anyone have any pictures of where they ran the piping for both sides of you intercooler. I bought a LT1 intake horn from trickflow so I can change the direction of airflow so it enters the intake from the passenger side. It is going to require a 4 inch spacer as it will hit the tensioner pulley. This is why I need some ideas and or pics.

Re: Looking for an intercooler idea
just a note; chroming the pipes will cost you some of the efficiency of the cooler. - You wouldn't believe how much those cheapy chrome "cold-air" kits actually heat the air charge.

Beside having to get a longer Battery Cable and a bracket in the back. Which apparently you have to remove the Spare Tire and pray like hell you never get a flat. Are there any disadvantages to doing this?

Re: Looking for an intercooler idea
Check with your local track rules on the battery box. It is likely you need a sealed box with a vent to outside the passenger compartment.
You can pick up a $5 plug kit at Autozone and a $10 electric pump from Harbor Freight or Wal-Mart.

Re: Looking for an intercooler idea
I finally have the battery relocated in the right quarter panel and it works great. This leave alot of room up front for the intercooler piping. I have cleaned out the nose area right now and still have to remove the front nose plastic so I can build the intercooler support and to drill the 3" holes for the pipes. Ideally when running piping I know you don't want to have too many bends. The Vortech S/C is designed to point toward the passenger side of the car. Can I run any 90 elbow's or should I reclock the S/C or will this cause any problems. I should have pictures available in a couple of days.

Re: Looking for an intercooler idea
90 degree bends inherently have pressure loss, (charge having to hit a wall of tube, then continue). I'd think reclocking is the best choice. Prochargers are all I have experience with but you can reclock them all day long. Driver side, pass side, hell, you could probably point it down or up.

Had time today to take the nose completely off and get the bracket built for the intercooler. Had to remodify the top bracket because of headlight clearance.. It looks good but notice that I have to modify the hood safety latch. Will post pics soon

Re: Looking for an intercooler idea
This is a GODSPEED intercooler. I ordered directly from California. I had to tell them the year make model of the car, inlet and output sizes, cores requested. It took them about 2 weeks to make and an additional week to ship. It isn't one of the light weight jobs that will fall apart after two weeks of use. It's overall weight is about 40 lbs. I reclocked the S/C last night and ran into a slight snag. I have the V-3 Si-Trim and I have to notch the brackets to reclock the s/c where I want it. Then I will run the piping and finish the install.

I installed the Vortech Si-Trim @ 22+ lbs of boost with a Intercooler. Here is the link on cardomain of most the pictures to include the aluminum piping piping. Sorry, I couldn't post them here.

Re: Looking for an intercooler idea
if someones thinking about an intercooler ever think about running a mk3 supra style FMIC? Its got both in and out on one side and its nice so to keep both charge pipes on one side and makes underhood look more clean.

looks coo too IMHO.........hey i used to own and drive a mk3 supra and used the fmic on a few different cars

i think rigging up some type of tmic and having a ram air hood kinda like the idea one the WRXs and STIs. Or try like a smic from a dsm and hide it down in the fender under the batt tray. i dont think the top mount would work tho it would be a cool idea.

I still don't have all the electrical hooked up but this will give everyone a general idea of how I have accomplished this.
