What stall for turbo turbo setup...

You can see the basic motor in my sig. Adding twin 60 trim t3/t4's this spring and keeping it at 6-10psi for now, then pushing it to 20+ when I get all the machining work for the bottom end done. What stall are you guys running? I'm keeping lockup and driving it semi daily so I don't want anything unreasonable. The powerband should really pick up at 3500rpm so I thought 3-3200rpm sounded good. I've been told that a tighter converter will get it into boost quicker so less is more?

you only need one t3/t4 to make great power.

Two will be enough to get me where I want to go. So back to stall...

Re: What stall for turbo turbo setup...

If you wanted boost to come on strong in the mid 3000 rpm range, i'd go near 3000-3200 stall. It should be enough to get into the meat of the power band and when boost comes on, the torque magnification will be tremendous.

Now that depends where you expect peak torque to occur and if you plan on racing this thing alot. Whats peak rpm at max hp and shift rpm? If boost starts rolling in at the mid 3000 range and peaks in the lower 4000 range, you may want abit more converter to speed things up. 3600 or so.

Re: What stall for turbo turbo setup...

Peak power should be around 6500 and shift at 7k, torq should peak high as well I'm guessing 5500. 5500 stall is a bit much for now lol. I think 3-3500 is where it's at while I have it at 6psi. I won't be racing a ton while I have the boost low, I figure I can get a good lockup converter cheap enough and I won't be making enough torq from a dig to really threaten the trans or converter so a $350 converter will do it for now. It should reach 6psi quickly- before 4k, but I'm also going to play with an antilag setup. I could potentially see full boost off the line, but it's set up to only activate from launch. Still want decent driveability when I putz to the store or if I feel like taking it to work without it coming into boost so soon that it becomes tedious to drive.

Re: What stall for turbo turbo setup...

I have a similar V6 setup. The new setup might go a tad higher than 7000RPM though, but I went with a pretty rediculous converter. It will stall at 5000+

Driveability is still awsome, I drove it all over the place.

I say go 4000.... (at least)

Re: What stall for turbo turbo setup...

If you spend the money ona good custom converter you can go 4000-4500 and still have it drive like stock For a setup like that, 4000 may be abit better.

I drove my 383 around with 3600 and it was a baby. very easy to drive, so 4000 is doable. I got 4000 in my turbo car now and it drives smoother than any converter i've had even tho it has higher stall speed. This is including my 3200 stall LS1 car. That converter feels loser than this 4000 PTC converter.

Re: What stall for turbo turbo setup...

i'm curious bl85c is this your first turbo project ? i'm not trying to be a smart *** but i hope you realize that under light tp moderate throttle you won't get anyboost . boost comes on normally from 3/4 to wot . you can have a fast spooling turbo that is full spool by 2500 lets say an under light accceleration it will drive like a n/a car . jus some food for thought ...

Re: What stall for turbo turbo setup...

my pt cruiser stays in the boost. i think going up a moderate incline with 1/4 throttle will have the turbo spooled up by 1800rpms. but that turbo is really small. it sucks that gas for a 4cyl car.

Re: What stall for turbo turbo setup...

on a steep incline`my srt4 with the stock turbo would also do that but with the 50 trm 63 ar it took 1/2 trottle with a steep incline to cause this . i was just making sure he knew that jus because car gets full boost at 4000 or whatever rpm that throttle position an load factors in to spool up . i drove my srt daily on many days it never seen any boost .

Re: What stall for turbo turbo setup...

I've messed with turbo stuff like this, among a few other projects I worked on. At about 1/4 throttle that motor would spool the turbo. It wasn't in pressure just kinda freewheeling at about 100KPa and it was noticeable in traffic, but it may have been the converter I was feeling.

From what I've heard the stock block without quality fasners will split at about 400hp. But there's still debate on this. Some have gone higher and others will split way before that. I roasted mine because I got over zealous with the nitrous lol.

Mars did you have your converter restalled or did you get a nice piece?

Re: What stall for turbo turbo setup...

My converter is a TH350 unit. it was on my g/f's 454 Nova (runs 11.20) and she went to a lower stall I took this one. It has anti ballooning plates and is good for big big power from what Im told.... not sure about the rest of the details. But I love that converter.

Re: What stall for turbo turbo setup...

i still don't see why you need 2 of those turbos. If you just want the look of twins i would step down to a standard t3. more than 400hp is a lot on the v6.

Re: What stall for turbo turbo setup...

I need to find a girl like that lol. Looks like the tax return is going to a good converter then. Highest I can find that still has lockup is what I'll go for. The look of twins is part of it, but I already have most of the stuff for it sans turbos and post turbo exhaust. Like I said it's not staying at 6psi, eventually I'm going to wring out one of gm's racing blocks with the pair.

Re: What stall for turbo turbo setup...

i was thinking a pair of t3/t4 turbo's would be good for 7-800hp.... wouldnt that be overkill for a block that gives up the ghost at 400hp?

why not continue the twin setup youve got going, but swap a junkyard 5.3 or 6.0 in there?

Re: What stall for turbo turbo setup...

The racing block's good for much more. Baja racers have taken them to 15psi without a problem. I thought 900hp sonded high for t3/t4's, I was planning on 700hp.

Re: What stall for turbo turbo setup...

even at 20 psi i don't think you'll push much more than 500hp which a single t3t4 could handle. and say you can get 700hp how do you plan to plant all that or is this gonna be a dyno queen?

A 700r4 from PATC, ford rear and as much tire as it needs. What is this, 20 questions?

do you have a ptc in your car right now? How do you like it? I'm getting ready to order a 4200 stall next month just seeing how poeple like his work?

There is, but I haven't updated it in awhile. This is still in planning so alot could (and probably will) between now and once I decide to go all out on this motor. For now let's just stick to the mild build at 6psi.

I'm not touching the trans or 10bolt in the meantime unless I grenade one or the other, which I doubt. Both are fresh and haven't complained so far. New wheels & 255 tires are on the way. I need to do some suspension tweaks in the meantime like LCA relocation brackets and maybe adjustable torq arm if I decide to play with the ride height more. The heads on this motor are decent and it shouldn't need a ton of pressure to get power out of it. 6psi should get me near 400hp.

I have no idea what springs to use, not alot of rwd 60* v6 racers out there. Light *** front end.

Do you think I could get away with just getting some adjustable shocks and tuning them up? I was considering it anyway because of how crappy the roads are getting here.

Re: What stall for turbo turbo setup...

The PTC converter is great... it just that the first time I ordered it, I gave them as much specs on the setup as I could and estimate power /torque and told them I think 4000 stall woudl be about where I should be.

The converter came in and when i drove the car it stalled at more like 5400 rpm...I shift by 6 so wayyyy to much. I finished out the year with that since I didnt want to tear the setup down. I only had 3 months to wait til winter then I could tear it apart to get the converter out.

So i did that and told them what was going on and how the car performed and that I wanted to tighten it up. This time it appears to be around 4000 stall and drives like a dream. The old 5400 stal drove just fine on the street too. They got the driveability down... acts very tight off boost and opens up when under torque load.

Re: What stall for turbo turbo setup...

I'm going to take you guys advice and step up to 4k stall. I can still get one at a decent price that has lockup. So about shocks, do you think I could get away with just stiffening them up so I don't squat on launch or will I need to tweak more to get it to hook?
