Intercooler questions
Intercooler questions
After taking the firebird out today with the Procharger intercooler installed and almost over heating I had a few ideas and was hoping others would chime in. Obviously the main problem is that the Procharger intercooler majorly restricts airflow to the radiator. So a few ideas are forth coming and feel free to comment wether positive or negative.....
1. I understand the advantage of the twin intercooler setup in the stickies. Also understood is the parallel setup due to the reduced inlet/outlet size of 2.5 inches. Now if someone was able to find the same intercoolers with 3 inch inlet/outlet would there be a down side to running them in series? I understand the first intercooler would do more work then the second but performance and cooling wise would there be a problem???
2. With firebird front bumpers they have the bracing behind them and the 2 "removable" panels on either side. One idea is to remove the plastic bracing between the bumper and support ( I understand the reduced safety from a front impact that would cause ) and mount a intercooler in the provided space. Preliminary measurements show that a 32 X 10 X 4 intercooler should fit no problem. but might have reduced airflow due to the center section. Another idea would be like above 2 smaller intercoolers, say 24 X 8 X 4 moved outwards to take up more of the opening and therefore provide more cooling. Afterwards would make up a aluminum piece to "pretty up" the openings. This would also provide unrestricted flow for the radiator.
Just seeing if anyone tried either of these before or if there is a general concensus as to why it would not work.....

Re: Intercooler questions
I ran procharger IC for several years, on both 383cui and 415 with no overheating problems? In what condition are your cooling system? thermostat? have you hotwired the fans?
Well yea, I had cooling problems last year city drivning when I had 5000rpm stall convertor
and 2 small summit fans ....

Re: Intercooler questions
get a good (preferably dual) shrouded fan setup and you can get pretty decent aluminum 2 or 3 core radiators for these cars all day for $200. Here's a tip, go to the bone yard and look for a dual fan setup from any mid 90s-mid 2000 chrysler 300m, stratus, sebring....they're almost dead perfect size wise on a thirdgen radiator, not huge and bulky and they move a TON of ****ing air and its shrouded. I picked up mine for $25....thirdgens have some of the shittiest cooling systems ever put on a car from the factory!
