single turbo advice needed

hi everyone i am looking for advice in a general direction to go i have my 87 iroc which is currently bone stock and what i am looking to do is make a single turbo conversion to get a lil more power and some turbo whine
this will be a very low budget build what i have for the build is a 85 305tpi out of a z28 ac delete car. i have a t56 and a 10 bolt disc rear out of a 85 iroc with 4.10 gears
i would like to use my stock manifolds and weld on the flange myself
i am a professional ase mechanic with almost 15 years in the trade so for the most part this should be a easy build
for the turbo itself i have a pretty compact unit from a 90 something volvo940 6cyl i would like to use this for a few reasons the main one is because i have it already but do you think it will be relatively efficient on the 305 ?
for a intercooler i have no idea please help as i would like to fit it in wile retaining my factory foglights
as for blow off valve and waste gate i was thinking ebay stuff ????? i really dont care about hurting this motor as i also have several more 305's laying around but i do not want to hurt my numbers matching eng trans and rear as my car has only 27k miles and i do want to turn it back to stock one day my next question is since it is a mass air car can i get away without a computer change and just bigger injectors and regulator as well as some internal porting and polishing of the tpi and heads ????
any help will be appreciated

Re: single turbo advice needed

Here is how I mounted mine:

You don't have to cut the opening in the middle of the crash bar like I did. It was something I expected to need (in addition to opening up the tag bracket area of the fog light trim bezel) but in the end it was not needed. I now run the original fog lights and trim and the car looks completely stock. This resulted in slightly higher air temps but well worth the improvement in looks. Irocs NEED the fog lights and trim to look like an Iroc!

So anyway you will have to remove the air ducts that go from the fog lights to the radiator. You'd also need a spare hood latch bracket that you can cut like mine is. Then you'll have tons of room for an intercooler.

I strongly recommend a tuning system of some type. In your case I'd look very seriously at the EBL Flash option since it is basically plug and play. You'd also eliminate the mass air restriction with EBL.

MAY beable to use the Blowerworks MAF and bin files to tune this setup as a blow thru mass air setup.

http://www.blowerworks.net/

What are the specs on the turbo from the volvo? Most single turbo 4-6cyl factory stuff is too small for single on a V8.

Re: single turbo advice needed

i am unsure of the specs on it but i did drive the car b4 i pulled the turbo it made modest boost it had a gauge but not numbered and the car did have some pull to it for a station wagon and i am going to look at the blower works mas air now but i am still curious as to why everyone is going the speed density route as many turbo cars from the factory are mass air

Re: single turbo advice needed

Well our MAF's are limited in stock form...a n/a 350 can max them out. A boosted car will over do one in a hurry. Blowerworks gets around this with some code modifications and a sensor capable of reading more flow like an LSx sensor. Speed density works but only option I see is EBL or code $59. Code $59 is nice but can be a pain in the butt when first using it and trying to setup a good base bin. Really dont have much of an option than to start from scratch. Scaling dig's 60lb base bin that used to be on code59.org worked ok but for me its easier to just copy/paste a L98 350 MAP based bin from 8D and scale it and the base pulse constant til you get the car running. Then its alot of tuning from there

Re: single turbo advice needed

the volvo turbo is way to small to use by itself, maybe as a pair they would work.

if u want cheap single turbo look into an ebay gt45 turbo 300 bucks will get u a good 70mm turbo. might spool just a tad slow on a 305 but for the money ud pay for it id deal with a lil slow spooling

Re: single turbo advice needed

see the whole tuning thing is what scares me i may be a bit thick headed but why cant i put the maf on the inlet/filter side from what i know a maf measures the air coming in and with a modest boost level of about 8 psi as long as i can add the fuel and watch it with a wide band i should be ok no ? and i am unsure of this but i should be able to use a diffrent sensor from a already boosted stock vehicle if i had to because all it really is is a 5v reference signal right
the other reason i want to use close to stock parts is this will be a very very low budget build around $500 (ex wife takes all my money and got the house) and i have access to alot of stock parts for next to nothing along with several engines so i am not afraid of hurting a few

Re: single turbo advice needed

i was kinda thinking the turbo would be too small from the volvo but i already have it .....my buddy has a gran nasty and has some spare turbos etc he may give me but we will see
i was kinda thinking about the gt 45 and a mild cam in the 305 but i am trying to do this on a very limited budget and not really looking for too much power but 500 would be nice

Re: single turbo advice needed

Ebay does have some budget T70's with T4 P trim turbine sides...smaller than the GT45's so it should come on alot quicker.

You can put the MAF on turbo inlet side and that will work for most driving but you still need a way to add fuel in at higher boost. Turbos are not linear like belt driven blowers, meaning boost can come on at a variety of engine loads and rpms. You can have light throttle and 4 psi at 4000 rpm or full 8 psi by full throttle at 3000 rpm. Stock ecm is NOT setup to handle that kind of fueling demand.

You need pressure oriented fueling tables which is what a MAP sensor system does.

Re: single turbo advice needed

ok so i get the whole map sensor thing now but does anyone make a plug and play add on like msd since i already plan on using my 6al box to light the fire and a boost referenced stand alone would be great to control fuel, and would a later model 88-92 tpi harness and cpu work for a map system with a new prom chip ?
