So let's go out on a shakey 2.8V6 limb

So contrary to logic I'm contemplating a ghetto turbo set up for my 85' 2.8 firebird. I understand this is a horrible endeavor and bound for explosion but I've got nothing better to do. I just want to know what would be the best salvage yard turbo to use, running about ...lets say 7psi. of course homemade plumbing and a cheapo intercooler. What car would donate the best possible turbo in assumed running condition. I don't expect over 300HP at the flywheel granted, nor do i expect it to blaze past anything. I really just want something to do that's off the wall without doing a full motor swap.

-So i guess this is to challenge the minds of those of you brave enough to (or stupid in my case) to build the franken car.

umm its bene done many times with amazing results we have cars in the 11/12/13/14 second range with stock v6's with turbos

look in the v6 section at fastedis build thread for a budget turbo build total cost was about 900 bucks and his car is capable of running 12's once its fully tuned and dialed in.right now its running 14.0 stock it ran 17.0-17.2's but even at the 14.0 he has enough mph and power for the car to be running in the low 13's

see my sig for what my v6 does my car will go 11's with a lil more boost and tuning

and btw the 2.8/3.1/3.4 motors internals are rated for 7,000 rpms and 400+hp,and ppl have made over 500 hp on stock internals

ur cars an 85? thats carbed isnt it?

Its multi port injection, and im thinking a smaller turbo for low end power/ less lag. Im fairly new to the v6 game, just bored of sbc atm

ebay t3/t4 50 trim special or the ebay t3/t4 57mm turbo, fast edi run the 57mm unit. the 50trim is about 130 bucks and is smaller then the 57mm unit, and will spool faster and work better on a mostly stock engine i.e no head porting or cam swap.

the 57mm unit is 118 bucks and is better if u want to make more power with a port job done on the heads and a cam swap.

doesnt sound liek u want to get into the engine at all so i recomend the 50 trim unit.

tuning is going to be the hard but yet no so hard part, u would have some choices to make though

the stock 2.8 maf system can handle around 7-12 psi ( it actually depends on how much power the motor makes not the boost level) and once u hit the limit ur kinda stuck. its a limitation of the maf ecm

other option would be to get a 7730 ecm or 7749 and swap that inplace of the maf ecm, swap a few wires in the harness and ur good to go.

fastedi or sixshooter or any of the guys in the diyprom section can help u there

i personally run an aftermarket ecm

also u not limited to only say 5-7 psi, the motors can handle boost well into the 20 psi range if properly tuned, "properly tuned is the key though"

btw dont bother with junkyard turbos, most of them will be full t3 turbos and they are to small even for the 2.8L engine, the ebay units are a dam near perfect choice for a street or drag racing type setup
