Supercharger vs new crate engine

I was thinking about getting a stage 2 supercharger for my 89 Firebird. It's a formula 350 with about 123k miles on it. My buddy suggested scrapping that idea in favor of a new crate engine. If cost is roughly the same (4-5 grand) which is going to be the better option? I think I'm leaning towards the new crate solely because it would be new.

Re: Supercharger vs new crate engine

Don't base that 5 K soley on your engine if that is your budget, your tranny will need to hold up to that new power. Like Twin Turbo said a LS swap would be a great route, figure out your budget and spreat that money across the car, you want to go fast but the car will need to handle and stop also. Good luck and keep us posted on the build, love to see the new ideas come to life.

A crate engine, and a supercharger, and tuning, and new trans + converter, subframe connectors, and good brakes.

If the motor is in good shape try to find a used blower kit here or just buy new if you have to. Reallllly need to watch the tune but it will run good, faster than any crate motor you could get for 4-5 grand

IMO, you should first ask yourself how much power your looking to put to the ground, how much you really want to spend, then pick the most sensible way...

Re: Supercharger vs new crate engine

I just put a procharger (D1SC) on my car this past winter, not sure what kind of supercharger you are looking at or how much boost you want to make, but having a strong base (motor) is key to the potential of what the supercharger can do, along with cam/heads and everything else.

What are your goals? certain amount of HP? Certain E.T.?

Hey man, what mods and pulley size are you running? Also was the motor stock when you first put the blower on? Im trying to figure boost vs pulley size on a stock L98 (just to start the build...)

Re: Supercharger vs new crate engine

I started out with 4.25 pulley and just went down to a 3.70 pulley. No the motor wasn't stock (383 stroker), it ran 12.90's on motor before I put the supercharger on. Real quick, I have a scat forged crank, scat rods, j.e. pistions all in a 4 bolt main block with 1" billet steel stud caps. Dart pro 1 alum. heads. Victor jr intake w/ C&S blow through carb.

Just scaled the car last night, with a 1/2 tank of gas (6 gal.-I have aftermarket billet alum. tank) it was 3660 with me in it (I'm 200lbs).

Motor is @ 8 1/2 to 1 compression.
