Tuning...where do I start?

350 TPI, nitrous, heads, cam, D-1SC procharger, 3.73 gears...to name the bigger upgrades to my motor

This is all about to go on my TPI and I'm going to need a tune. What do I do? Ive been reading and looking at sites but I'm a little confused. I've read some where here about the timing having to be severely adjusted due to the procharger? Im having a shop tune it and I don't know what to buy or where to buy the tune

Someone lead me in the right direction.

Re: Tuning...where do I start?

That's a lot of changes at once, your not messing around lol. For sure you'll have to adjust the timing, 1 degree per pound of boost is a good minimum though to do that on your stock computer is not going to work out so well. To have a good running car your best bet out of these three choices would be to swap out the computer to a 730 and run the code 59, swap to the EBL-P4 computer, or go with a aftermarket setup like Holley EFI series. They all have there advantages but for your case a self learning system would be helpful. I'm not sure what the shop is going to do for you, your better off with a wb02 hookup and learn to tune yourself.

For a cheap setup and able to do a self learning feature, you might be better off with rewiring and running EBL-P4. Looks like a decent setup and you would get lots of help from the forums.

one of the better responses Ive gotten in a very long time here. Thank you.

I was told by my shop that they dont have what it takes to tune a TPI. They wanted me to do a LSX swap because they are so easy to tune. I searched and saw a company that you send them your info on whats in the car and they send you a chip with a tune?

What are the codes/abbreviated words you posted mean?

Most shops don't tune those old ecu's anymore. And compared to the way the ecu's are today it's a pain. Unless you are tuning it yourself, you might want to go with the suggestion of a shop you trust and feel comfortable with rather than keep the tpi. Unless the shop you trust says they can do it.

Re: Tuning...where do I start?

If it's the engine in your sig you're way under injectored. With a Procharger and a real set of heads you're lookin at some serious power. If your shop doesn't tune TPIs and wants you to LS swap time for find another shop or at least another tuner it sounds like they have their pocket book in mind instead of you making power. If you wanted to go that route you could swap an LS1 box in with some work, although I'd probably just do a Megasquirt, EBL, Code 59 or aftermarket ECU at that point.

Figures as much, most places wouldn't know what to do with the old TPI computers.

From the sounds of it your looking for someone to get the car running for you which I can understand, there is a lot to learn and know and can be scary, or some people just don't have the time. Basically you'll need to tell us what are you willing to do yourself.

The 730 computer is from the 1990 and up TPI cars, its the speed density system running off of a MAP sensor. The code 59 is the program for the cyclone and typhoon turboed GM trucks that's been modified somewhat. It's what I run but its not something I would recommend to someone new to tuning.

EBL-P4 is modified GM ECM with lot of cool features, I'm not really the guy to ask about it but I think it would be good for someone just starting out to tunning. Here is a link http://www.dynamicefi.com/EBL_P4_Flash.php you would need to repin your wiring harness to the 730 to make this work. Looks like it even has N2O control too. I would really consider this if you plan to do things yourself.

Then of course there are the aftermarket systems, the Holley EFI ones looks pretty good and would and would give you everything you want. I believe you would need to run a new harness as well or hook into your old one. A shop might have a easier time tuning for this if your going that route. Another good system to consider is megasquirt, though that comes with its own learning curve. You would have to ask people that use it how it all works but you can do a lot with it and the price ain't to bad.

Last option would be doing the conversion over to the newer LS computers on your gen 1 engine. It kind of expensive but least your shop could tune it lol.

I keep hearing about "mega squirt" and Im just lost in the sauce because I know nothing about it. I had a LS1 years ago and finding a tuner for it was simple. plug and play...

Re: Tuning...where do I start?

I'm far from a tuning expert like others on the board, but I know there's 2 things you don't want under boost...a lean condition, or timing too far advanced for any long duration of time (i.e. pinging or detonation). If your injectors aren't up tot he task, I'd be installing bigger injectors. What size will depend on you boost level.

I know nothing about tuning computers...my car is all old school which still requires a lot of tinkering and adjusting. Getting my car on a chassis dyno helped me a lot so far as WOT jetting is concerned, along with dialing in the A/F ratio. Also helps with getting the right timing curve so you know how far you can push it before detonating. I can't hear if it's pinging or not over my exhaust. I'd highly recommend getting yours on a dyno even if you think you have it right.

Sounds like the car will be a monster on boost and nitrous at the same time!! Wahoo!

I'm definitely going with bigger injectors. It was a given when I decided I would go the D-1SC route.

Ill be running between 10-14lbs with a 75-100 shot

Thanks again for all those that have helped. If you're reading and have some advice or a link to a website you think is helpful, please chime in.

Megasquirt is an aftermarket system. The tuning software is called Tunerstudio

The value behind Megasquirt is it works with just about everything. You could swap out almost any component, use any ignition system trigger, injector, iac/idle valve, sensor, whatever and you can calibrate it. With the stock stuff if someone wants to run DIS or boost for example with a $8D mask (stock ecm) it's 22 pages of discussion on the prom forum, and only 2-3 guys actually know how to modify code to make it work.

Re: Tuning...where do I start?

Find a shop that has efi tuning experience with one of the major systems out there like fast xfi, big stuff 3, holley hp or dominator, mega squirt, motec, accel dfi, etc

Buy the system they are comfortable with and do the conversion.

Have them tune it, and be happy. Thats the best way at this point in time. Trying to pick up stock programming at this point on that motor will be learning curve you likely dont have time for, and it could end up hurting the wallet more in the end

Yup like I said find a shop you trust and go with the system they like.
Otherwise it could very easily wind up costing you way more money and time.
