intake pipes over radiator under frame?

Was thinking of clever, simple ways to get my procharger into an intercooler and back into my throttle body.
I see plenty of radiators out there that is the same length and about 3" shorter.
31"x16" comes to mind. With a little work, would there be any reason it would be a bad idea to run a shorter radiator though with 2-3 cores and snake my charge pipes between the top of the radiator and under the radiator support to make a 90 degree turn straight into an intercooler?

Re: intake pipes over radiator under frame?

I cut my upper rad support and went over. No issues here. Try leaning rad back some like 4th gens to allow more room to snake piping under top rad support. Going over requires cuting into the hood and losing hood latch, atleast how the factory has it configured. I cut into my cowl hood to allow 3" pipe to fit over. Its tight in there.

I would have liked to just run 4thgen rad and leaned it back to allow alittle easier routing. Oh well

Re: intake pipes over radiator under frame?

Yea Orr that is what I was thinking. Over the radiator but under the support and with an only 16" tall radiator, I can give it some lean to fit the pipe as much as I need. Thanks for reading my proposition.

Re: intake pipes over radiator under frame?

My rad is 15.5" and still needed to cut rad support. The rad is straight up tho. Try moving the base forward towards nose more, and lean top of rad back. Else oval the pipe some lol

Re: intake pipes over radiator under frame?

Dont want to mess around with unnecessary piping and twists and turns. Plus the battery is not relocated and there is no room around that.

How is it still held securely? the front of the tray has a lip that the battery tucks under.

Re: intake pipes over radiator under frame?

One of the coolest setups I've seen went right through the upper support. They welded the pipe to the support so it became part of the support and painted the whole thing so it looked factory.

Re: intake pipes over radiator under frame?

they make an aluminum bracket that pushes the battery forward and the bracket bolts to the factory location

Re: intake pipes over radiator under frame?

I saw a similar graft of piping into the core support on the GM Performance Parts Impala on the 2007 Hot Rod Power Tour:

VERY cool IMO!!

I was able to run charge piping up by the battery in my setup, but I ended up installing a universal battery tray and hold down so I could scoot the battery a little closer to the radiator to give me the clearance I needed. I also only ran 2.5" pipe (compressor outlet on my turbo is only 2.5", so I didn't seen any need to go bigger with the piping)

I'm sure your idea would work, my only concern with a smaller radiator would be to make sure that you still have enough cooling capacity, although you have a Camaro, so you don't have the same lack of airflow issues that the Firebirds do...

Re: intake pipes over radiator under frame?

I agree you can slide the battery around and fit 2.5 stuff by it. Just like the stock procharger kit.

Sounds like you dont want to run that long way around it all. Why not get a custom FMIC made with side in and top exit to go over the rad. support.

Bamm.. more pic's for ya man.

Thanks for the side/top idea. Is your idea to run both pipes over the radiator still but the intake would make a 90 degree into the side, and the top exit just exits straight up and into the engine?

Also, keep in mind my procharger pipes are all 3" so I doubt that would clear a modified battery tray clearance.

wouldnt a inlet/outlet both on the top of an intercooler work better so i can avoid a 90degree angle to feed the side?

Going to sell this inner cooler as I have went way bigger with engine and had to relocate a lot of things. I built it. Install isn't too much to do. Notched radiator support as you can see and installed threaded inserts for mounting. Had to modify hood latch but not get rid of it. Would come with the latch base bracket that you see so a bolt on. Core has 14" tube length x 17" tall x 3 3/4" thick extruded tube sized for 383 roller w/d1sc 14lbs and worked very well. Did have to do minimal trimming to the front hood brace but not much. Nice part is hardly any hose, very short run back to intake. Wasn't going for pretty, just good function. Intake tube is already oval to line up easier with tpi. Fairly quick install. I also have a used radiator that I built that can go with that is already shortened in height. Radiator is 2 pass with both connections on pass side. Core only is 26" x 15"tall x 2 3/16" thick core. Has an integral bracket that lets you bolt into the original threaded holes on the top of the radiator support. Has integral brackets for oem dual fans. Neither looks "brand new" but had no problems with either and can guarantee no leaks on both. If your interested pm me.

You think I can fit a 3" pipe over the radiator on a firebird if I use this hood:

I'm thinking of changing some things.
