What turbo??

My much needed friends,
Im going single turbo.. I have a 5.7l with small port vortec heads running 10:1 compression(will be doping compression .5 point more info on that story if needed) at 5280 in elevation. I have a set of xs power manifolds as a starting point to go turbo. I need a cheap turbo e bay style to run less than 10lbs for a short while any advise on size would be much help? i want to run 5500 rpm and i know too small is much problems with back pressure/boost control. if any more info is need i will give you the full story. This is a weekend cruiser and track toy BTW.

Thank you guys

Re: What turbo??

Like said above really hard to beat the price and reliability of the GT45. Its physically pretty big though. Not sure if it will fit on the XS power BBS knockoff setup.

Another option is the ON3 Performance 76mm. They have a 64-65mm turbine (hotside wheel) which is around $319 on ebay. It would probably choke up the motor above 6000rpm but for a TPI you should be fine since you will be shifting around 5500rpm. They also have a 75mm turbine that is out but I believe they have been selling like crazy so I have yet to see one listed. I think they are in the $450 range. From what I read on LS1tech is it appears they are using a Turbonetics wheel. Same specs etc.

Re: What turbo??

Awesome the gt45 is what I had in mind. As for size I'm not overly worried I have a wide 4in hood and plan on doing fab work on the manifolds. With the non ball bearing gt45 do I need to run oil pressure restrictor? Just read that ebay turbos have issues with too much oil pressure?

Re: What turbo??

I like the on3 idea. Turbine isnt as big as the gt45, better for lower hp and response but not sure what you are looking to do with this motor.

I want to get a turbo set up installed and working before I do my engine build. Right now I just want a cheap set up so I have plumbed hot and cold side and play with some tuning for the last days of summer. Then 383 build will happen over winter. I'll feel a lot better building a low compression engine knowing for sure it's going into a turbo car.

Re: What turbo??

At 5000+ ft plus density altitude corrections, more compression isnt a bad thing

Agreed im saying building a full forged boosted engine vs a na engine. What would you suggest for compression ratio?

Re: What turbo??

What fuel? What final power goals?

I went 9:1 on aluminum head and can run over 20 psi on street on pump gas. 1200ft. Built for 1100-1200 whp in mind. Doin it over i may have gone 9.5-9.8:1. Alittle better off boost performance. Less boost on pump gas but still good power on good fuel.

Lower boost at high elevation 9.5-10:1 is likely not a bad idea for a good overall performance street motor that may see pump gas plus race gas on track days. Always good idea to have some race gas on those race days to keep things as safe as possible. Iron head may want slightly less but hard to say. Depends how cool you can keep it.

E85 or alcohol is a different ballgame lol can do alot of compression. 10-10.5:1 aint bad at elevation

Re: What turbo??

im at 6500 ft above sea level in utah , i built my motor just shy of 9.5-1 cr , dont build ur motor any less then 9.0-1, depending on how much boost u plan to run u could build it as high as 10.0-1 at this altitude and run it on pump gas . ive run my new motor at 10 psi on 85 octane fuel without detonation
