Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

Well since some guys on here follow my instagram, the cat is out of the bag. New motor is home and currently under my bench. Plans are to slowly build it as my car is still running. Baby 2 is on the way so it will be a slow process. Ill continue to upkeep the Turbo LS until I have a complete assembled long block.

I have prepared myself to be hated on by most die hard GM guys, in my eyes its just an 87Z28. Not a collector car and its far from stock anyways. I love my turbo LS setup I just feel its time for something new and different. Ive been messing with LS stuff for the better half of 10 years now. I want a new challange.

Here are the plans

1994 2JZ-GE 3.0L Inline 6 (NA motor, same internals as a GTE minus oil squirters and higher comp pistons)
BC272 Cams
Headstuds, thicker head gasket, upgraded springs
Aluminum intake with 90mm TB
Sch40 stainless manifold
Turbo is in debates. 7875 billet (may be a tad laggy) or a billet Borg S369
T56 conversion
MS3-Pro
Lots of boost.

I'm a die-hard gm guy, but I also believe it is your car and you should do whatever you want with it.

Hell, I've even started looking at electric motor conversions.

Well this dummy took a great video doing a rolling 2 step launch. Waterproof case killed the sound .

Been driving her every day to work and loving ever minute. My daughter constantly tells me "to make that noise" the BOV. 3 years old and loving it. However her and my wife didn't care for the 2step. Thought I was sending my wife into early labor LOL

Nice, she looks good. We have similar driveways... 3rd gen a me a 4th gen ram

do u man. I did a 521 BBF before I went LS and people loved it. Given it was a physically huge motor it wasn't a 4 banger.

I will keep my eyes peeled. Don't know if any right now. Surprisingly they don't pop up often. Same with the 2jz I got that's why I jumped on it lol

thanks! It's around 14psi currently. Debating on doing a few things the winter. I would really like to put ac in it but that would require an entire new turbo setup. Decisions, decisions

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

Quick little clip of the 2 step in action. After my quick drive today I came out to the clutch pedal on the floor. Gave it a quick bleed and flush. Seems to be better now. Has been 2.5 years of abuse without changing fluids. Hopefully it doesn't need a clutch or slave anytime soon. Still up in the air on the 2jz swap and definitely dont wanna spend 2k on a twin disk if I'm not keeping the LS.

Personally, I think you should do the 2j swap. I myself am torn on what motor to build for my car. I'm thinking either a built replica dz302 with Itb's (going for approx 450 @9000rpm) or getting a 1jz. the 1j revs faster and a bit higher than a 2jz, and 400-500 hp is just a bigger turbo away. I'm building the car to drift/track a lot, and I want to make the best of my two favorite worlds in motorsport. I love 3rd gens because of my dad(he had an iroc) and I like jdm stuff from seeing it growing up (fast and furious, formula drift, etc). A 1j in a trans am would give me a more japanese sound and still make good power.

The biggest concern I have with the jz is the wiring... the fab work for mounting it would be pretty easy, as will a t56 adapter from collings or something, but the wiring would have to be basically a 100% custom thing. If I cut out everything, I was thinking I could run the engine on a standalone harness+ecu, then just have the chassis harness running independently. I'll probably have a buddy at a local shop help out there, because tbh I don't know wiring for sh*t... that's partially while I'm considering a dz302 type motor because wiring is virtually nonexistent.

What are you planning on doing for wiring if you do swap it?

wiring is the least concern. I run MS3Pro which I wired myself. i love wiring so i can just buy a new hardness to wire the 2jz since i wont be using factory style injectors, coils or cam pickup.

Well I have already torn into my car. Hoping lots of progress this year now that I finally have a heater!

I'm building a few LS turbo setups based off the hooker turbo manifold for a few 3rd gens this winter so decided while tearing my car down I would check the new turbo fitment to my current hotside and it Fits!! The cold side will need a bit of change and the downpipe needs a new flange. Easy peasy

More to come on the new turbo kits. They will be stainless with billet t4 flanges

Interested to see what ur going to make for the hooker turbo manifold setup. Looking at picking a kit up to play around with. You got picks of what you’ll be making? Also are you just making the part that goes from the 3” vband off the pass manifold? Or are you making a DP as well?

Waiting on all the exhaust pipe to come in. I just whipped up a quick mock up mount in 15min to see if it will fit here. Hood closes!

Planning on making the part that goes to the turbo. Downpipe I'm debating. AC guys would probably be on their own. I found an AC mount that should work with this setup (300zx ac compressor, driver side down low using vette accessories) so those wanting to do vintage air will have no problems. (Car I'm building for is going vintage)

BTW the engine bay is getting repainted this year. I hope! Lol

Let me know if you need any machining help. I have a manual bridgeport and lathe in my home shop.

This is going to be fun! Decided I will end up mounting the turbo a bit higher (still have like 1.5" to the hood!) So the lug nut spacers are just mock up.

Going to have to build this all out of pie cuts for the most part! Yikes.

btw the accessories are the new Holley mid mounts. AC compressor fits. I'll need to make a custom billet adapter for the lines. But not a big deal.

Wow! That looks awesome, clean cuts and all! What tools you got for cutting pipe? Mine never come out that clean lol.

Mid mount holley system looks good as well, I thought about it but they are $$ and you have to use there stuff right (like alt, PS pump etc)? I like that the pump uses a cartridge as you can just swap it out when it fails vs having to get a whole new housing etc.

hahah I cheated, bought the pie cuts from Bend Brothers. Super good pricing. I think it was $22 for 6 pie cut stainless 3" (enough to make a 90)

The holley ones are $$$ but my buddy weighed the options. He wanted AC and the only way to do it with this setup was $1700 on mid mount for everything and the water pump flows more) or $700ish for Vette accessories, add a water pump, SFI balancer and buy an AC setup built for a 300ZX TT swap ($350 for the bracket) and $300 for the compressor) It all kinda evened out.

Im going to continue this part of the build a new thread since my setup will probably stay the same as last season (minus the new turbo)

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

Big changes coming! Safe to say the 2jz thing is not happening for some time....

Last night i ordered

Holley Terminator X (unsure why to be honest, my ms3pro works flawless and has more features.) I think mainly because im debating swapping the Intake which means i need to re-wire the harness.
Hooker Turbo Manifold setup with T56 crossover
Stage 2 turbo Camshaft
Fuel injector hats for my Bosch 210s

And ill be building myself a new hotside like the others (i have 4 already built/sold)

Safe to say ill have a good amount of parts going up for grabs including my old turbo setup and ls6 cam.

Built my new setup this weekend. Waiting on material to show for my downpipe, and my terminator X should be in for pickup as well!

Purdy!

Terminator X should work well, I dont like the single 02 and no option to add a 2nd and the internal MAP sensor (glad they let you add an external one at least with extra cost). But I drove my bird with the 5.3, custom cam, billet VS 78/75 and Modded CX hotside out of state (moved from NJ to CT) with the $799 fitech sytem (which I only paid $750 for) for the 90mile trip and it worked flawless. I have taken it on long trips before but this was the first time out of state and I hit a bunch of traffic. Basically the holley is a better brand and a more $$ system so it should work fine if my $750 system works great.

The single o2 thing doesnt bother me, i wont be going Twin turbo anyways...or maybe LOL

At least the wired the map sensor for a factory MAP, However I did buy the patch cable and a LS3 2.5 BAR sensor since they already have the calibration.

Looks good! Very clean. Down pipe looks good as well but tight as *****! You sure you won’t get any vibration or contact when things start moving around?

Looks tighter than it is. Its closest to the manifold but the turbo is bolted to the engine so it cant hit anything. I have like 3/4" clearance to the frame rail and almost solid mounts.

Getting close. Fires up and runs great! Gotta somehow fine some 3.5" bellows to finish my exhaust. Going to make a new gauge cluster this week, waiting for a Holley sale and I'll sell my entire setup for the 7" dash.
