Blown head gasket from the supercharger??
Blown head gasket from the supercharger??
I have only 800 miles on my new engine. Mods include, Stock tpi intake that has been ported and has slp runners, ford 24lb svo injectors, cam; 208\222 @112lca, compression 9\1
AFR 190 heads, TES headers with flowmaster exhaust, paxton supercharger 8lbs of boost. I jumped on it getting onto the freeway today and it started running like crap. Turns out i blew my head gasket on the passengers side. Why??? plugs are black, it's been runnig awsoome until today? on the way home i got two codes; 32 33 Can anyone help me with this? Is the supercharger blowing my head gasket? I did not have a ring grove for the head gasket on my block because I was told that I did not need one if I was running under 10lbs of boost? And with the stock enging, i never had this problem.

i'll take a stab at this one,
Code 32 is a EGR fault
Code 33 is a MAF fault
As far you blowing your head gasket, most likely it was caused by detenation, from either running lean or to much timing, just because the plugs were black doesn't mean that you were running a rich condition when you were making boost., are you using a boost/timing retard unit, are you using a FMU, custom prom or aftermarket ECU?.
we need alittle more info

The supercharger itself isn't responsible, but the icreased airflow from it without enough fuel with it may be. Also the increased cylinder pressure with too much timing advance may be. The bottom line is that detonation is the culprit.
That's right, you can have detonation without hearing it, and that is the detonation that kills most engines because you can't hear it to know it is there.
The plugs being black don't indicate that you are always running rich either. You could be running rich at idle, rich at part throttle, and rich at wide open throttle up to a certain RPM, and then be going lean.
I would say you most likely have an air/fuel mixture problem and secondly may have too much timing advance.

Thank you all for the replies! I did have my timming set at 11deg advanced and before the new motor, i had it at 6deg advanced. I will set it at 6 once i tear down the engin again
It was really wierd, i steped on the gas, the transmission dropped into 2nd gear, and immeadiatley, no power
Thanks again for da help!

Thanks again for da help! just one ? did you retorque the gaskets as you should have.if not i would do it this time.i blew one that hadent been retorqued and have never had a problem since i actually started following the instructions,,

You'll may need to use a higher octane fuel to avoid detonation
even if your A/F R is right and timing is right. A water/methanol
injection system will allow more boost with more optimum timing
With less fuel dumping... Which equals more power for a given octane fuel.
Sort of a poor mans intercooler but very effective.

Craiger,
Reading plugs on a supercharged engine is next to impossible. Don't believe what you see. You really need a data logger to read active data streams to really understand what's happening or get the car on a dyno.

Sup Quicktirp,
And U R right as Always!! I got craig moates software...gonna do that next. turns out, my hobbs switch runs my aux. fuel pump so my fuel psi is consistant durring boost was loose= detonation= new head gasket...TG that was all! Anyway, what a pita! almost done
PS cascade crew misses ya bro!

Sounds to me like you solved the problem yourself!
You already know more than I do about supercharged cars.
Man, the northwest was a great place! I realize that even more after moving to the midwest. By the way.... the CASCADE CREW ROCKS!
