Question about those pumps they use for low mounted turbo oil returns?

You know...the electric ones that fit inline in the return and suck oil out of the turbo. I'm thinking of trying 1 or 2 out. I can't think of anything else to try and solve my smoking turbo problem. Other than these I'm stumped.

Whats the deal on these pumps? how much do they cost? where can you get them? Can a trial-version be ghetto rigged from something else for cheap so I can see if it works?

The turbo to bonnet piping isn't done, so it's still NA. I have pretty much all the NA tuning and bugs worked out however, except for the smoking and a couple leaks, so it runs fairly stong.

Jester, do you have the turbo's freewheeling? If you run the turbo's without any restriction, can't you overspin the turbo? I don't know if you should be running that thing arround with the turbo just blowin in the wind, but then again, i'm no expert.

lol..I had my TT project DONE before Guido even bought his turbo and started fabbing

Hell..wanting to be just liek me is the only reason he went to turbo in the first place

I did ask someone about that at one point way back in the beginnings of this project. Can't remember who it was now or how competant they realy were..but they said it would be fine. So far..they've held together fine. I don't really mind a little extra stress on them in the break in period, just to be sure they won't frag later on under boost. They're kinda unproven junkyard units anyway.

A couple of references from turbo books you probably already have...

Turbochargers:
one was made by Martin Schneider which I think is this company:
http://www.msdsinc.com/
its an electric sump pump with AN fittings.

Aviad Metal Products Company and Weaver Brothers are also listed as making belt driven units.

Says a 1.5 GPM rating is needed for a 3" turbo.

Aircraft use oil sump pumps... might look into that.

Maximum Boost:
Says there is a Oil pressure driven sump pump... takes oil pressure fed to the turbo to drive a sump pump. Does not reference who makes it.

You might also try Calloway http://www.callawaycars.com/ or TurboTechnology http://www.turbotechnologyinc.com as I think some of their turbos may have used sump pumps.

Thanks Dan. Calloway should have them, they use them on thier TT vettes, but I didnt see one online. If I keep striking out I'll call..but I imagine calloway will overcharge. I didn't have any luck at the other 2 sites either..but sent out some emails.

I foudn this at JC whitney...think it'll work LOL

I'll keep searching I guess.

I was looking under a Road Racing Corvette the other day @ a buddies shop & it had a Lube pump for the Differential that took the fluid up to a small cooler & then back into the top of the Diff where the breather used to be. The pump looks VERY similar to the Mallory Fuel Pump that I used to run when I had a Carb on the car. You might check with some roundy round guys or Road racing/rally car guys to see what they have I bet that it is very common with those, specially the ones that go endurance for an hour or so. Sorry but I dont recall the vendor, but I recognized it.

Hey Jester, if you don't mind.......keep my up to date on what you might find. I was thinking of doing something similiar to provide the turbo's with their own oiling system. Thanks
