some help please
some help please
i have an 89 trans am with a vortech fed L98. i was planning on either buying a crate motor or rebuilding it. im leaning towards rebuilding it though.
i want to keep the tpi setup so the blower can remain . what rebuild kits do you guys recommend? (part number, website, etc etc.) also, what heads would you recommend using? if any fabrication is needed to accomodate a new pair of heads, please fill me in. i am on a budget of roughly $2,000.
any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks in advance

sorry I didnt fit in the bounds of the budget but you could do the engine, then head and intake later. I recommend as a minimum on the TPI atleast; slp runners, throttle body, and maybe a edelbrock base. for heads trick flow 23's ($895) machined for felpro wirelocs, and ARP head bolts. for shortblock; professionally rebuilt using stock rods (ARP bolts), stock crank, ARP main cap bolt set, TRW forged pistons (unless you can afford SRP's) then tell the nice vortech tech man what you have done and ask what pulleys he has for you. lastly fly, fly, fly...and dont land unless it is on a mustang.

the only problem I can think of would be an egr port missing or something like that. As long as you order the S/Rs for an 87 and up SBC there shouldnt be a problem. For the money I would splurge and get a set of pro action or Trick Flows for a couple hundred more.....just my opinion though.
yeah, thats tempting but i live in hawaii and shipping would cost me an arm and a leg so im trying to keep the price to a minimum. besides, im not looking for anything "radical" as of yet.
S/R Torquers that have an 87-up bolt pattern will be a true bolt-on for your engine. They have an exhaust crossover passage.
Your stock L-98 heads have 64cc combustion chambers so you will want to get a set of 64cc S/R's to keep compression the same (9.5:1). Stepping up to 76cc chambered S/Rs will drop your compression almost a full point. Which might be something to consider if you would want to crank up some serious boost (8+ PSI) later on......

I ran those heads the 87 up version has all the right stuff in all the right places. except the port size is only as good as any good portmatched stock head or those tiny edelbrock performed/performer rpm heads. that is why they call them S/R's or Stock Replacement. better than diggin through a core pile looking for good doubl humps, I think you would be better served using vortec (L31) heads and the new SDPC2000 base (sold together) I was unable to find the "package deal they offer with the heads and intake base but that would be an inbetween alternative to the s/r heads and the trick flow heads. here is the base manifold you can find the heads all over http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...1460&pid=13740
