I'm not sure exactly where to start, but I'm interested in learning more about how to use some of the many features of this site.

I wanted to reply to my own message just as an experiment .
So what does the envelope with the wierd black dot over the flap mean? And why is mine the only message that shows that?

It means you replied to that post. The lighter envelopes are unread messages since you last loaded the board, the dark ones are unread from last time.
