i like what gk does over at 3go. he doesn't have the post count visible. what you have to do is look at your profile (or anyone else's) in order to keep track of how many posts you have. i strongly vote for the idea of having no visible post count.
hey ede, why the childish behavior all of a sudden? all it's doing is make you look that much more immature.

Relax, geez. I think ede was just poking fun that Mark said he wanted his 10K posts back so people would trust him more.

i didn't even name any one, just typed in some stars. why'd any one, or everyone assume it was directed towards any one in patricular. mark does this mean we're not friends any longer? i don't know if i could bear it if we were not still friends.

That could have been the reason
I think he thought it was directed to himself because you put the correct ammount of stars to blank out his name and in the correct order.

Ive seen other forums where instead of a post count, they have a points system of sorts where when someone helps you you can give them a point, which is shown by little icons underneath the persons name. That way, even without the post count, a person would still be able to tell who was credible and who was not. This would work wonderfully here if we could pull it off.

I dunno about the points. I think people will start complaining that people don't give them enough points or something and then "retaliate" and rate them low back. It could turn ugly.

a lot of people will complain at first, you know. I like the idea, but taking the devil's advocate, people aren't going to know who to trust and who's a nub trying to spout off a bunch of hear-say, which is a common theme for newcomers (even me when i was one... yikes!).
still, an excellent idea

They'll do the same thing whether they have to click on a profile or not.
I don't doubt it, but hey, where can they complain about it? Just post something that says if they complain about it then they will get put on probation, the second time they will be banned. If they don't like not seeing their precious post count, then they can leave, simple as that

casey, i look at the people who have been here the longest when i have a question. but then as well, i'll listen to any suggestions on something, then make up my own mind. i like to have as many possible viewpoints as possible, so i can make a more informed decision.
i'd like to see the user agreement re-written to include some statements on what is tech, and what isn't tech, since some people are obviously too stupid to define what is thirdgen tech, and what isn't thirdgen tech when they make posts. also explain that post count is not something that will be discussed, and that if the issue is pursued, then that person is subject to probation, and or banning.
as far as a rating system, why couldn't we leave that to the administrators? brad or dirk could evaluate the board occasionally, and award points based on how they felt the question was handled.
the regular members can rate people through the classifieds board based on purchasing and selling experiences, so that kind of balances out.

Lol I told ya that would happen, but you didnt listen. I imagine you might get your post count back, as long as Brad or Dirk think you have learned your lesson.
Aww, you guys don't know nuffin' 'bout no flaming.
Hang on while I just - get - that..... Last ..... Carbon.... CONTROL - ROD out of there so we can experience a REAL melt-down!
THERE! Now we can just sit back and watch the warm glow.
Wow. Are we all being that sensitive? Can't anyone take a JOKE any more? Are you really THAT worried about your Oreos being banned? I'd be looking at the opportunity, and start setting up a black market on sandwich cookies, not whining about it. When someone opens the door, you gotta be ready to step in. Instead of whining, send another poke back. As long as it's all in fun, what's the big deal?
Erase all the counts. Make them all a million. It doesn't matter. You stand just as good a chance of getting sound advice and help from a newbie as you do from someone with a five-digit profile. I think far too many people equate the number of posts with experience. All that indicates is internet experience, not anything else. Some of the best resources we have rarely post. Just search the archives and member lists for membership date, profile (what they do for a living), and post totals, and you can start seeing that there isn't usually a correlation. See how many times Shadow has posted, and you can get a feel for the situation.

Since the post-count doesn't say a thing about real-life experience, it doesn't need to be visible. A 40 year-old can have a low post count, while a 20-year-old can have a high post count. Neither is guaranteed to have more wisdom. The checks and balances is covered by other members commenting on the comments.
Right. And since it doesn't matter, why are we all so hung-up on it? About the only time I use it or anything in the user name panel is when searching out trolls or to reveal those first-time posters, mainly for giving them the thumbs-up and congratulations for finding the site. The geographical information isn't necessary either, but sometimes it can be helpful. I think it may be useful to eliminate the member information as well, so people don't have a stigma attached to their names. It doens't matter if a person is a Junior Member or Administrator. If the post content has merit, that's what really counnts. If someone posts misinformation, you can bet that there will be a line waiting to post objections. I think we all look at the number for more than they really are. Just ignore them.
I've lost about 1,500 posts in various board crashes in the past few years, but it doesn't matter, except that some of the archive was lost along the way.
Basically, instead of changing the board software (and all the problems associated with that), just train yourself to understand what little value that data may actually contain. Read the meat of the post instead.

that was my point that i failed to elaborate cleary enough
my second point being, that since it does not matter, we have too many people acting foolishly like it does and wasting bandwidth in the process

I say hide the postcount in the profile.
Quantity does NOT equal quality.
Perhaps a "TGO Wiseman" tag for the more helpful members would replace postcount? Those who help the most with correct info are given the title instead of getting credit for saying "hope someone helps you out with that." Just an idea..

Ditto on what Inwo said. Quantity definately does not equal quality here. I can think of at least a few people off the top of my head that probably 50% of their posts were the 'hope someone helps you with that' or 'nice car' or some other 1 line sentence that is pretty much just post whoring.

I said 'pretty much'
I'm not saying I don't post and tell people nice car or something similar when they post pictures of their cars, but it seems like there are several who do just because its like a free post and they can raise their post count. I'm not saying I'm right, its just my .02

I totally agree with the "quantity does not reflect quality" concept. I've made Camaro's my life and passion, have quite a bit of statistical and general info, and I'm not even a senior member yet! I didn't know this site existed till last month! But, as a few people have hinted at also, here's my $.02
First off, the post count, slightly in correlation with membership activation, allows for people to see how new of a person they are, and how accustomed to posting they are. The GM General Manager could very possibly discover this site in the next few weeks, be able to answer like ALL of our questions, but not know much about posting. Having that info is good for helping newbies. Secondly, newbies that don't know everyone and aren't aware of the fact that other newbies are usually more than capable of helping like to post where they know people that have been here for a while and have a high post count will see it. That gets them to post, then, other people can give thier comments.
So in other words, I don't think the post count should be eliminated. I DEFENETLY agree that people bitching about it should be dealt with, but, thats just me...yeah, my $.02

I noticed this message while I was posting about the "submit" problem...
If you're trying to find out whether someone knows what they're talking about, don't look at post count. Right below each person's message, there's a little "Search" button, next to the "profile, pm, email, www, etc" buttons. Click on it. It searches for all the messages posted by that person. Read a few of those, and you'll find out if the person knows their stuff, or if they're just a troll looking to start fights.
That's another way to avoid "internet fights" too- if the person always posts BS and starts with other members, don't even bother replying. Let 'em fizzle out.
I always wonder how much of thirdgen.org's servers are being taken up with real tech, how much is taken up by stupid bickering, and how much is taken up by nonsense "worthless" messages.
Go 'head, try the "Search" button below my message... and life's too short to worry 'bout whose post count is higher.
