Board Related - Tables, Lists, Structured Columns
OK, I hope I'm just having a senior moment, but I can not figure out how to post a columnized post? Like comparing one race slip to another? The TAB key changes the cursor focus (OK), but multiple spaces are reduced to one? Leading spaces to zero?
I hope I'm missing something? IE 6.0.29 on WinXp SP2.
Using SPACES in this Example, no special text/format attributes. The asterisks should be (closely) lined up:
*(Column 1) *(Column 2)
Line one *(Column 1) *(Column 2)
Line 2 *(Column 1) *(Column 2)
Line three *(Column 1) *(Column 2)
Help!

Ok, found the CODE tag, much better, but having alignment problems beyond proportional spacing. You ARE using SPACES within the CODE box to line it up?
Please check post #2 in this thread, the decimals should be closely aligned: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/sout...ml#post2864371
Although I recognize I may have some hidden tags in there because I went through the edit process so much (left align, center, etc). How is the leading (column zero) length accounted for, looks backwards to me?
Thanks,
Dave

The problem is, for something like that, CODE isn't the best. It just works, with minor tweaking. The best approach would be using HTML table tags. However, not all forums have HTML enabled, though the forum where your post is in does have HTML enabled. Not sure if that is wise and if it will change due to HTML security issues. Using the HTML table command is more complicated, and more work, when you can simply use the code tag, with minor tweaking, and get similar results with less coding, as well as the fact that not all forums have HTML disabled to use the table tags.
I'll edit your post with an HTML table tag example. You can then click on the Edit button of your post to see how the HTML table tag works, if you want to see.

OUCH!
I am well schooled in the classic programming languages, though I've been left behind in the last 15 years or so. But that is a LOT of work to compare two time slips!
Is there not a simpler solution to retain multiple whitespace? Tabular representations are obviously valuable for before and after comparisons. The old-school repeating space bar should be a better all-around approach than an image-scan and post? Maybe not these days, I simply don't know.
No hard gripes from me today, I appreciate your response and example,
Dave

Having HTML tags turned on was another one of the surprises that Dirk left us... No board that I know of leaves them turned on because of the huge security hole that they open. HTML tags have been turned off on all boards, sorry.
As was already said, I would suggest using the "Code" tags as they will allow the [Tab] character.

Code:
Col1 Col2 Col3 Col4 1 2 3 4 2 3 4 5 3 4 5 6
