I've been having this problem for a while now. Whenever I try to post a link, like this one (to my for sale thread), which just leads to another page on the TGO message boards. I dunno what you want to call it, "internal link" sounds good to me... Anyway, after I just post it up like that with the default options checked ("Automatically parse links in text" & "Automatically retrieve titles from external links"), when the link is clicked on it comes up with "Page Not Found." But, when I disabled those options, it would work fine...

Well now, wouldn't that figure... It has been happening to me very consistently for weeks, now it works fine. Well, I feel like an idiot...

So, with that apparently no longer a problem... I have another question. Is there a way to disable the automatic retrieval of the post title? It is sometimes inconvenient to have it automatically add in the title of the thread you are linking to... Not a big deal, just curious.

 

This is a global feature that can't be customized per user. It's part of the vBSEO plugin that we use which basically takes vB's links (which are usually meaningless with php) and rewrites them into links that are identified by the forum and subject title. We've had this feature for just over 2 years now.

For example, the original vB link to this thread would be (without vBSEO):
With vBSEO:
The vBSEO plugin was installed for search purposes, as well as the benefit of allowing members to see more of the type of link they were clicking on (as shown above). If a member was presented with the two links above, they can easily see what forum the link resides in and what the subject of the link is.

What you are asking is if you can override vBSEO from inserting the internal subject title of the link. As mentioned, this is not possible on a user basis. It's a global feature that's either on or off.

Nevermind again, I guess... Apparently all I have to do is refresh the page after posting and the links are resolved properly, but the parenthesis thing comes up. See below...

That is a bug I discovered with the vBSEO plugin we are running. It appears to surface if you use Quick Edit on a post that contains an internal link. It causes the above issue that you note (note the insertion of exclamation marks in the URL and the double board URL - which makes the link dead). The advanced/full edit does not have this bug.

Yes, I understand. The adding of the parenthesis is part of the vBSEO plugin and there is no default way to turn that off. I suppose with some advanced coding that could be possible. However, in the 2 years we've had this feature, there has been few reports of this being an issue. It's only an issue when someone wants to be "advanced" and manually edit an internal link inside a post.

I hope to upgrade the vBSEO plugin, which should resolve the bug that was pointed out above. In addition, I strongly suspect it is also a source of another bug we have, which should get resolved as well. I don't think it will give the ability for "advanced" URL linking without the automatic insertion of the subject, as you requested, but we can look when that time comes. Hopefully we'll have some progress.
