is it possible to turn of the auto-subscribe to every thread replied to? i couldnt' find it in the control panel.

 

1) UserCP
2) Edit Options
3) Find "Default Thread Subscription Mode" under "Messaging & Notification" and set to Do Not Subscribe.

That will then become the default. You can temporarily override it by using the long-reply form and selecting an option under the "Thread Subscription" for any given thread.
