History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
I bought this off ebay. My car doesn't currently have a spare at all and there is absolutely nothing in the spare tire compartment. I'm wondering if one of you nice fellas can help me determine what all else I need to complete this kit for it to sit in there and mount up correctly and also appear as stock as possible. Here is the one I bought and what all it included... What else do I need besides the "wedge" that the tire sits on?

Thanks for any help!
Perfect! Thanks allot! It appears the kit I bought is pretty much complete according to the diagram.
I dont see the little plastic/rubber wedge the tire sits on in the diagram. I see them for sale on ebay all the time. Did all cars receive those? Or does the spare not touch the bottom of the compartment when mounted up? Maybe there are different styles?
The plastic wedge was for the aluminum 16" spare I believe as it was a shorter overall diameter before inflation.
Side note, I had no idea people bought this stuff. I'll keep them when I part cars from now on!!
Please DO save the donut spares. A man can still buy a new tire for the spacer wheel on average of about $50 brand new. But finding an original with no dry rot and appears to have only a little use and still have the label inside the wheel along with the original jack with the label on it is priceless to some folks. And I'm not sure you can buy a new wheel for them...havent looked, because I wanted an original to be refinished.
Ive been looking forever. With the use of a heat gun to remove the label from the wheel and the label from the jack and a little spray paint, and throw all the mounting hardware in my buddies sandblaster, it will appear to be NOS when I'm done!
If you look on ebay, you cant hardly touch a temp tire for under 85-$100 and thats just for the tire and the wheel in decent shape.....never mind if it also comes with all the original mounting hardware. I was glad to even find it.
On a side note, for those parting cars, just price them right and they will sell if they are decent. There is another set on ebay right now for $400 STUPID.
Average for a NICE one is $100. Throw in the mounting hardware and well, depending on how nice original shape its in will bring $125. Thats what Hawks wants for his on Ebay right now anyway....but it appeared to me to be missing a few items, and the jack is not what I remembered to be original so I passed.
I recall a discussion about the spacer a few years back (?). However, I don't recall what the consensus was regarding its use.
Any of the cars that has the inflatable spare steel or aluminum wheel got the spacer.
I think but not 100% sure only the aluminum PBR rear disks got the aluminum spare wheel. My '88 with iron calipers got a steel wheel (that will not clear LS1 rear disks)

Their was two different types of spares for the 3rd gens,1 was the Compact spare and the other was the Stowaway spare. The Stowaway(Inflatable) is the one that got the plastic spacer and also got the Blue air canister.

I didnt realize any of that until this thread. Definitely learned some things.
I just lucked up and found the set above that would be correct for my 83. Dumb blind luck though. And that its in nice shape is a wonder
There are at least three different jack/wrench sets, and as many wheel/tire combos. 82-86 use the long ratcheting jack with traditional tire iron. 87-91.5 use a screw drive scissor jack with a ratcheting lug wrench, lug wrench extension, etc. 91.5-92 use a screw drive scissor jack, and a fold out lug wrench that clips onto the jack.
There's a steel always inflated mini-spare, a steel collapsible spare, a 10-spoke aluminum collapsible spare, and the stamped aluminum collapsible spare (painted black) for PBR disc cars.
The plastic spacer won't fit at all with the PBR spare.
There are some other small differences, like the hold down screw for the inflator canister clamp is longer on some years, etc. But the minutia is best researched by the year of the car and studying.
Well, at least for 82-84 cars the spare pictured in the original post does NOT use any spacer. Both my 82 & 83 do not have one.
The auction you purchased looks complete far as I can remember!
This is the spare that used the spacer as it had to be inflated & was shorter beforehand.
I finally got the set a few days ago and got it all mounted up in the car. I'm missing two pieces from what I can tell from the manual. A retainer to hold the wrench to the jack, and the butterfly nut that tightens down on that same retainer.
If you part cars, I would certainly buy those two pieces from you! The retainer and wing nut are both pictured in your set-up above.
