When did the 1LE package come out, and more on the G92 package
History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
When did the 1LE package come out, and more on the G92 package
Hey there everyone...okie dokie. So officially FOR sale the 5.7 came out in 87. We all agree on that. Questions are as follow. I am under the impression that the G92 package for the 305s came out in 87. Which was basically bigger camshaft the G92 KC4,and J65 codes. I did some research on here, and the 1LE option I believe was available for the 305s and 5.7? And this is where the radio option was delete, AC, aluminum driveshaft, and the G92 as mentioned above. HOWEVER, question is this. in 87 could you not get the AC delete, radio delete, and things like top center console deleted?
What was the absolute best performance "made for track" package the 305s and separately the 5.7 liter offered in 87? Also wasent 87 the only year they offered T-tops with the 305s and the 5.7?
Re: When did the 1LE package come out, and more on the G92 package
Wow - whole lot of questions and mis-information.
First year for the 1LE - 1988
1LE did not require UL5 Radio Delete
G92 was NOT an option package it was only performance gears
Best combination for an 87 would be an R7U Players Cup car which would be the 305/5spd G80 G92 J65 or the similarly equipped 350/auto.

The G92 performance axle was available since the beginning of the 3rd gens. It was an option in 1982 as a 3.23 axle ratio.
As was mentioned, radio delete had nothing to do with the 1LE package and the overhead console was just an option that had nothing to do with the performance side of the car.

Okay....well let me ask you this...if you had the G92...did that mean you got the rear disk brakes and engine oil cooler standard with that on the 305? And bigger cam shaft then...see where I'm leaning with this one.
Was having the G92, KC4 code and J65 rear disk brakes and the bigger cam for the 305 5 speeds not that unusual...or I guess for today would be considered somewhat rare at all for 87 and or by todays standards with IROC-Z

Would you consider a non 305 players car with the options you mentioned rare now a days...minus having the radio and being fully loaded? Minus the louvers in the back
Re: When did the 1LE package come out, and more on the G92 package
Maybe we could just cut to the chase... Any nice thirdgen is an unusual site anymore. When you see one in good to excellent condition, it's usually because someone has busted their *** to make it or keep it that way.
Now... When it comes to what is or isn't rare... You can either look at the production numbers and feel that they made a ton of cool cars, so none of them are really true "rare" or you can look at every minute detail and say that since there are sooooooo many variations they're ALL rare.
One way you can separate the men from the boys is performance. You've always got a pyramid of thirdgens with the fastest cars at the top, and the 4cyl auto and CFI cars at the bottom. j/k about the CFI cars. Realistically speaking, the very top of that pyramid is going to contain a lot of different cars, Firehawks, TTAs, 1LE cars, L98 and LB9 5spd cars, etc.
If you factor in the most coveted option combinations, it's going to vary from person to person. Jim-Bob might like T-tops, so a 350 TPI car with Ttops might be his pinnacle. Joe-Dean might place more value in a manual transmission, so his zenith of the mark might be a 1LE LB9 5spd with sweat soaked seats. Bobby Joe might like cars that look slow but got it where it counts, so he likes to picture little baby Jesus cruising in a B4C with the air conditioning blasting.
Even more specialized are the production number chasers that dumpster dive every dark corner of every gear head hang out and the wildly obscure fine print of some magazine article or internet rumor in pursuit of the car with the most unusual, lowest production option combination. For those folks the end all is a thirdgen that's 1 of none ever produced.
Everyone has to decide what they like, what they appreciate, and what they value above all else. Trying to predict what Fatty McDipshit, in his garish Hawaiian shirt, at the collector car auction is going to bid sky high... That's about the longest of longshots.
Screw rare. Screw resale value. Do you think the car is cool? Bad ***? Worth the trouble? Because if you do, it is. That's my rambling .
Re: When did the 1LE package come out, and more on the G92 package
In 1987, option G92 required the additional options of KC4 (cooler), J65 (rear disc) and G80 (posi). These were not included in the G92 "package", but were required when ordering.
Where are you getting the information that you keep posting? Larger camshaft?
G80, being a requirement for the G92 option, was a requirement on the LB9 engine. Also, the KC4 was only available on the LB9. So, all G92 cars will be the LB9/TPI 305 or the 350 cars.
Rare doesn't mean desirable, or valuable, so just because something's rare, doesn't mean it's a retirement fund.

Thanks Drew!!! As always it's good to hear from you. Well what u said is insightful that's for sure...u really have one of the best ways of putting this whole topic into perspective. Heck I never quite looked at it that way...but what u said males the most sense

I was told by some members on here that if u had the 305 with the yellow tach starting at 5000 and not 4500 tpi of course and the G92 option u got a bigger camshaft...making the extra horsepower caused the tach to be different...no? If I'm mistaken please let me know on that...
Hey thanks man!!! So was there a special code or anything for the bigger Cam on the 305 that the article u sent mentioned??? Like how would u know u have it...minus the tach...
Re: When did the 1LE package come out, and more on the G92 package
Wish I had the answers you seek. The link I provided was one I had come across some time ago & your postings reminded me of it. I doubt that article is the "be all end all" of information on the LB9 and might even contain some inaccuracies.
There are many knowledgeable members here (several have replied already) and LOTS of information on this site. Continue with your search. I'm sure you'll come across more answers to your questions.

I don't believe there were any non 305 Players cars in 1987 - or for any year for that matter - to my knowledge they were all 5spds.
My IROC is a 305/5spd, G80, G92, J65, KC4 car with the UL5 radio delete that I ordered new February 17, 1987 and while it may be special to me it certainly is not rare.

No.
The 5500 RPM redline was on the L98 cammed LB9s or the '85 LB9 with an L69 cam, or the '90-'92 LB9 with N10.
ALL '87-'89 5 speed LB9s came with the L98 cam and 5500 redline tach, G92 or not.

O I have a question..may be dumb...with the radio delete did u still get the antenna?
Re: When did the 1LE package come out, and more on the G92 package
5500 RPM Redline tach and yes, with mine I got the antenna and the wire harness but delete plate was in place and the side trim panels behind the speaker covers were un-cut.

Wish mine was delete...I guess one day I will have to fix that too...ugh...pretty easy to remove that whole assembly and solder the wires...well use environmental splices I mean and crimp it with a butt splice
Nice video, whenever I do stupid stuff in my Camaro, I look over to my gf and say "Drivin like an *******"...she just shakes her head and rolls her eyes

Ha Ha, I'm sure most of us on this board know exactly what you mean!

G80, being a requirement for the G92 option, was a requirement on the LB9 engine. Also, the KC4 was only available on the LB9. So, all G92 cars will be the LB9/TPI 305 or the 350 cars.

Been researching on the KC4 code...so it was only on the 305 cars you say....not the 350s? Also I guess that means the 350s did not SHOW it on the RPO sticker? Also I realize NOW that the G92 was a performance gear not an option...but your saying that the KC4 CODE was with ALL LB9 cars period??? And was not added in when a G92 car was ordered. AND one more question...so why were the engine oil coolers only on the 305s and not the 350s...?
