The Classic 'Blowing through the Gas Filter' test

Well, I changed the gas filter in my GTA yesterday. It looked clean at both ends inside. I know you can't see what's trapped inside the filter in the pleats. But what I could see looked very clean. No junk fell out of either end.

I was able to pour gas into the 'in' hole and it slowly dripped out of the 'out' hole, so it was letting gas go through, even with just gravity and no pressure.

I didn't feel like getting gas on my lips so I didn't do the classic 'blow through it' test yesterday.

Today it was dried out and I tried blowing through it (both ways) and I can't get ANYTHING to go through it. Completely blocked, or maybe just very very small amount of air getting through it.

Before I put on the new filter, I blew through the new filter and the air went through easily.

Why would the old filter be so hard to blow through?

Could it really be totally clogged ?

Is it because I let it dry out?

Thanks

I've changed lots of plugged filters that I couldn't blow through.

Cut it open and have a look.

Cut it open! Use a cutting disk or grinder. Chicks dig the sparks!

On second thought, just throw it away. It's not on the car anymore, so what does it matter?

OK, I'll cut it open!! Jeez!

Nail hole followed by tin snips, and if that's too slow, then hacksaw and C-clamp or vise.

I just tested it again today by pouring some gas into it, and the gas dripped right through it, although slowly.

Letting it dry out before I hack it open.

OK, finally found the tin snips. Hammered some nail holes into the filter and ripped a gash into it with the tinsnips enough to look into it with a flashlight.

What I saw was a dark grey coating of slime on the pleats. No solid junk anywhere, no grit, just this dark grey slime.

I then took a sample of the slime with a toothpick and rubbed it on my finger and it looked brown, not grey. Not very thick, but just enough to come off on the toothpick.

Maybe that's normal for a filter with 50,000 miles and 20 years on it. Don't know.

I do know my fuel pressure has gone up from 26 to 30 since I put the new fuel filter in.

I blame The Blob.

Glad the filter improved your fuel pressure.

I have run about 5 bottles of Techron through this system over the life of this filter. Maybe not relevant.

Maybe the brown coating is just your basic run of the mill 'varnish buildup'.

Or.............The Blob.

This was ours after just a couple of months. Gas tank was rusting out and needed to be replaced.

Wow that's full! Is that the filter just before the carb? I notice it is keeping the junk on the inside of the filter.

My inline filter on my 88 is the opposite : it keeps the junk on the outside of the filter pleats. The inside stays clean.
