I need yalls opinion.
For the people who saw my car at the houston meet. Im thinking of replacing my entire top end with a TPI set up cause the TBI i got ain't doing my much good with horsepower. Do yall beleive changing the top end would be a good idea?

Well bro if its horses you want and you are already working on the exhaust i say tri and open that up with some good headers and y pipe as well as a nice 3 inch cat back.. you should atleast allow your motor to breathe better even though she is a 305. I have known a couple people that can get some good horses out of a 305 but.... honestly for the money your going to end up spending on that 305 you may wanna start thinking about an engine swap. The exhaust setup will also translate to any motor you wanna drop in her. The TPI is really gunna give you more torque than horse in my opinion.

Re: I need yalls opinion.
get with jupiter about the fenders you are gunna need... I'll help you work out the body on her or get with gilbert and his pops who if i remember correctly is a body guy and has a paint booth... could cut you a good deal never know?
Re: I need yalls opinion.
thats going to be a lot of work for little more horsepower. if i were you i would throw a lt1 cam in it. better intake, exhaust, and headers along with a tune. by the time you do all this you could have done a swap. but! trying to make a 305 fast is a feat in itself. and on top if you want it to pass inspection. well. thats another story. look into tbi section and i know there are a few in there that have made good power with cams, intake, exhaust, and a 454tbi. best of all it will pass inspection.

Re: I need yalls opinion.
Id talked to him about the fender already at the meet. as for the rest of the body. it's going to wait for now. Wouldn't a basic tpi set up be better than the tbi? And i dont care much about what i spend on the car. i work at a crapy job and i got college in the summer. An engine swap would be around $2000 or more.
heck, i can't even pass inspection now. lol

Replace the whole 305 with a 350 and a carb or EFI or a LS engine with carb or EFI, just ditch the 5 liter, LOL.

Re: I need yalls opinion.
If it is your daily driver, keep it simple for now. A rebuilt 350, cam, intake, carb, headers can be done for less then $1500 on a budget. This would give you a decent base to keep you drivable while you slowly fix the rest of the car. Of course i say this assuming your brakes and suspension are done since that is where you should start. Lot's of power on a crappy chassis SUCKS. Just my two cents. Keep in mind i have two parts cars whenever you need some parts.
P.S. ooh yea, i happen to have for sale a Edelbrock RPM intake, Edelbrock 750 vac sec elect choke, Holley 750 vac sec manual choke, Headman headers, and many other parts...
If you really want to do a TPI conversion, I have one for sale with wiring harness and computer.

Re: I need yalls opinion.
Im still young and i plan on having this car for a long time. got college for 2 years then got to get my masters in electrical along the line. Im going to start off small for now. such as the tpi, whole top end and exhaust for my little 305; helps me get to know my car better.
Jupiter, what year is the setup from and is it the speed density one? and do the headers have the y-pipe?
oh and jupiter, does the firebird still have the exhaust and the rear end?

Re: I need yalls opinion.
I got the rear end from it bro...
Its actually cleaned up with stainless steel brake lines painted calipers and d/s rotors just waiting on the pads and some hardware to reinstall it... although i believe the tpi jupiter has won't fit your 305 ... if i remember correctly it came off an 88 formula 350 car.. not sure if its compatible although i could be wrong... I think your best bet is kinda what everyone else has been saying... Beef up the chasis and suspension... exhaust... these are all things that will give you better handling and can still be used if you decided to swap motors... you drop money on the tpi setup and decide to motor swap later everything you put in that 305 can't be used on the 350... It's like building a house... everything starts with a good foundation... your talking about the roof .. lol

Re: I need yalls opinion.
didn't he have 2 rear ends that were the same but one with drum and one disc breaks? Might as well start from the back to the front.
And didn't you have a posi tarc read end too, Drew? the one from when you bought your camaro.

Re: I need yalls opinion.
On a stock 305 the TBI is NOT holding back your HP, at least not enough to justify removing a single intake bolt in my opinion.. TBI does suck if trying to use it with a healthy motor mostly because of the tuning that is required. (I'm starting this fight with mine right now.)
You could throw a TPI or carb & intake or even a tunnel ram on that motor & not much would change. The exhaust, heads & cam are your real corks. (see attached pictures.) My suggestion for you being on a budget is to do some simple bolt-on mods like headers, exhaust, a 14x3 open K&N & look on this site for the ultimate TBI mods.

& yes your power potential is also limited by having a 305 vs a 350. Unless you come across a working 350 super cheap, or your 305 decides to throw a rod, just stick with it. The car won't be a dragstrip monster but can still be somewhat fun to drive. Plus you shouldn't have to worry about your trans or rearend not being able to handle the program.
Oh & take those mudflaps off & make Frisbees out of them.

think both of the rears should have 3:23 rear gears unless they are from weaker cars.. but i think they are both from z28's....

Re: I need yalls opinion.
ever thought bout blow thru turbo setup?
u can replace intake with single plane. prepped 650cfm carb. intank bosch pump. rr fpr. hotparts made from steel exhaust tubing and manifolds or cheep shorty headers. with a MPTurbo t60 t4 turbo. and basic 38mmwg.
keep around 10psi on pump gas with fmic.
prolly end up same $ as upgrading with h/c/i on the 305.
plus all the hotparts will transfer over when if you decide to go with 350ci motor.
