I have the cheap harbor freight one and with the hydraulic ram touching the front bumper its still 18" short of being over the center of the motor

I drilled a new set of holes in the arm on mine to give me a few inches more length. If I get it right up against the bumper and lift from a little in front of the center of the engine it works.
Most often I pull the engine and trans together. If you are pulling just the motor it should be easier.

I've got six of the 85 lbs/hour TBI injectors getting cleaned right now. I expect to pick them up tomorrow.
I also just got eight 60lbs/hour port injectors that I will be adding to my setup as soon as the new manifold (Victor EFI) is ready. I'll still need to work out the new ECU to control both sets, but it should be nice when it is finished.

Engine hoists are for sissies.
Man-up & build an A-frame, that will lift the eng-tranny
up over the roof.

A frames are for wimps, all a real man needs is a come-along and a tree.
I've done it that way before.

im liking the mod of the engine hoist. i have the same one, but i got it from jegs a few years ago. i might have to do the same thing with mine. i wanna steal my dads aframe he built. its a good 16 feet tall and has been used to lift a honda completely off the ground once before.

Re: Need engine hoist - League City
a word of caution if you mod the hoist; The long base legs with the casters need to be extended to be just a little bit longer (well really just to the same length but a little factor of safety never hurts) than the lift point on the arm (where the chain attaches) when looking at the lift from the side, so the moment from lifting something will never be able to flip the hoist (assuming your on a stable surface).
It was only $74 for 24' of 2.5'" @ 1/8" wall square tubing at SSS steel wich leaves PLENTY to make the long arm and legs.
BTW if anyone local wants to borrow it just lemme know
