Advice 84 ta?

I’ve owned an 84 trans am L69 since brand new. I’ve had a lot of health issues and let car sit a few years. I posted a while back about old fuel and not starting and I’ve finally got it to start but even with some new fuel it won’t stay idle. It dies if you don’t feather pedal. I’m pretty sure I have a dead tank pusher pump, but I think it was probably dead a long time ago. I’m going to be taking it into a shop to see if they can get it running better. Although I maintained the exterior and interior over the years I have totally neglected the engine other than oil changes.
I have a lot of smoke and fumes from firewall area. Valve covers have never been done nor has intake ever been removed. I know the rear main seal has been leaking since 50,000 car has 140,000 on it. Looking for engine advice, I’ve heard keep l69 maybe it’ll be worth something someday. Am I crazy do do valve covers and intake in hope of stopping some of the fumes and smoke or is it a waste of money. Looking for advice on repairs vs some kind of swap. I don’t have an unlimited budget but am willing to put some into it as I’ve owned it nearly 40 years.
Sorry for the long post just looking for advice I’m in the Orlando area. Thanks

Re: Advice 84 ta?

I'd put a few dollars in it to see if it helps. Sounds like you haven't spent much on it sense you bought it

Re: Advice 84 ta?

Change fuel filter and see if it helps. Start there and move on to other tune up parts.
