Is that lift with a 1.5 rocker ratio? Are those 1.6 rocker arms? What engine is L31 5.0 or 5.7? what LS does that cam have? Whats the power band on that car? What valve springs are you running?
Just wondering?

Valve lift
rocker ratio = Gross lobe lift
Gross lobe lift * Rocker ratio = Gross vavle lift
soo you should have about 298 love lift(1.6 rocker ratio) = ~476.8
(yeaaaa i can do math
)Thats good lift for vortec heads with stock springs and valves.
What about the other valve?

That is with 1.5 but I am using 1.6 LS 114, stock spring good to .485 lift. power band is 1200-6300. if you don’t know L31 heads have 170cc intake 64cc combustion chamber 1.94 1.5 valve

well yea, You can get all kinds of good deals but when it comes to cames and carbed you should just go witha new one. For only like $100 bucks. And sometimes you don't allways get what you think.
Is that cam already installed in the motor? If not do you have the grind # should be on the distributer side of the cam all the way at the end on the side.

bought the cam new in box and yes it is installed. you just put in your motor, what is the break in period on a new motor? Should you change the oil after the initial startup.

Yea
Well yea when you start it you want to make sure that you instantly turn the ideal up to 2500 rpm's leave it running there for about 25 min and set the timing as soon as you are done turning the ideal up. When you are done change the oil and filter then just take it easy for about the first 500 miles. The most important thing is to make sure that you break the cam in right. This is the same thing me and all the other 5k people that I know have done every time that they started there new engines and it has worked just fine.

so i just started the motor it seams to have some timing issues at idle the timing has to be at least 36* advance for it to start do you think it is a cam to crank or a distributor issue or something else but i will try to get that in the morning by the way it still sounds dam good for having some problems.

How are you setting the timing in this thing? Is the car carb? What distrabuter are you running? And what balancer are you useing? Are you hooking up your timing light to #1 piston? you just have to give me more info on this thing in order for me to help you out.

ok not sure about the balancer or timing tabs but the balancer is off an 89 the cover is a mid 70s and the crank is a 68. the distributor is off the 305 still using tbi. the cam could be off it has a 3 way sprocket and I am not sure it is on the right one.

ok so I put the cover off the 305 on the 327 got everything relined and it still won’t fire up it tries to but it just won’t stay running . I know the cam, distributor and firing order are good, it gets fuel and spark but still won’t start. Any thing will help.

89 balancher and 68 crank do not work together. You need to go to autozone and buy a balancer for a 68 chevy pick up or nova that came with a 5.3L 327 V8. once you do that you need to put a timing tab that sits on the driver side of the timing chain cover, the timing cover for the 305 will not work. I think you had the right one to start with. I also think that the key on the crank is off set diffrent for a 68 327 crank then the new 305/350 cranks. So try that out and make sure that when you are setting the timing that. You have the rotor pointing at the #1 piston when the #1 piston is at top died center of compression. Aslo the firing order for a chevy V8 is 18436572 in case you didn't know that. Make sure you don't have any of your wires crossed. OH yea and do all the stuff i said to do on my last post.

You have to use a timing tab like this one in order for it to be right. Aswell as the right balnacer.

Well like always you can go carbed going to be easyer but going to get less gas bla bla bla. Or you could stay tbi. It really depends on what you are going to us the car for?
