temperary injector swap

hey masterdisaster and i are taking a trip to washington in june and i was wondering if i swapped my 21lb injectors for his spare 19lb ones if it would work for one and if it would give me a noticeable gas mileage increase for two. i know it would take some of my power away but i was hoping i could swap them for the drive. would it mess anything up with the ecm???

Re: temperary injector swap

I would just lower the FP and really not go WOT, unless you are about to be smashed by a semi. I don't think the MPG increase would at all justify the smaller injector swapout, and then when you realize this half way there that the gas mileage isn't much better at all, you will dread the swap back while having to finish your trip half *** performance. Besides, on the open road staying the limit or just over it, you should be getting 25+ if your car is in good tune and tires are aired up.

I remember a long time ago a guy lowered his FP to like 31Lbs or something in his 1986 TPI T/A and he was getting like 33mpg or so. I can't say if it was true or not and I haven't heard of anything like that since, so take it with a grain of salt.

I just did the injector swap, it's not hard, but it's not fun and takes a few hours.

Re: temperary injector swap

I would just stay with what you have in the car. Your chip is programmed with the injectors you have in. Going with the smaller one's will hinder your ride up - make a leaner mixture that the computer would have to correct and therefore make your fuel milage worse. As for the fuel pressure thing, the computer will correct the injector on time for the car to run. At 31 psi, the car may have a harder time running or even starting. Stay with the one's that are in the car. With the work I did on it, you would be better off. By the way, we need to get that A/C working. I have everything here. Will talk to you tomorrow about it.

Re: temperary injector swap

it made sense at first but i never bother to think of the ECM corrections plus im sure it would affect drivability with a smaller range lol oh well my only problem is we have a 22 hour drive and id like to cut that down, ive made it in 19 before and i was doing about 80-95 but last night with the GTA from the pavillions to our place it burnt 1/4 tank with some speeding, harder driving but still thats alot of gas.

And the swapout is a 30 min job for us at this point weve torn it apart so many time in the last 3 weeks that its second nature to me i suppose it helps that i screw with mine alot to get an idea of what im talking about with it lol

That seems like an excessive amount of fuel for that short of a trip.... Did you verify the fuel use? (In other words, did you re-fill the tank?) Mine shows it has used 1/4 tank when it has actually only used a couple of gallons.

Oh, and 1/4 tank should be about 4 gallons.

That amount of gas from the Pavillions to home sounds about right. That's what mine gets. Wouldn't worry about it too much. Just give yourself a little bit of a range to be able to make it to a gas station.
